Job Summary
To provide highly responsible complex administrative and operational support to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) in association with the Adult Hospitals Medical Sub-Segment Triad. This individual will be responsible for a wide variety of activities to enable greater effectiveness of the ACNO and to contribute to the accomplishment of the Department, Adult Medical Services and Organization?s mission.
This individual will contribute to all aspects of the ACNO work and leadership within the Department, with a focus on responsibility for representing nursing on clinical operations issues within the UH-Adult Medical Services. This also includes analyzing and assisting with communications, coordinating all aspects of strategic planning, coordination of leadership meetings, forums and schedules, helping to prioritize daily issues, coordinating and delegating agenda scheduling, and leading or assisting selected change initiatives and projects as assigned. The individual must have the skill set and experience to enable them to operate with wide discretion and independent judgment. Primary activities and decision-making authority are predominantly performed independently affecting business operations to a substantial degree. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position meet the criteria for exempt status.
Organizational Relationships
- Reports directly to the ACNO in the Department of Nursing.
- Collaborates with the Senior Leaders of Nursing Services, Clinical Nursing Directors and other UMH leadership and staff.
- Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over support staff, as assigned.

Responsibilities*
- Represent the Department of Nursing on clinical operations issues within the UH-Adult Medical Services.
- Provide professional staff support on all aspects of leadership meetings and forums requiring independent judgment and planning.
- Serve as a liaison between the Senior Leaders of Nursing Services and other discipline heads and nursing leaders, as assigned.
- Coordinate, review, and summarize relevant literature sources and briefing requests, as assigned.
- Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the Department?s functional areas and Hospital linkages to enable independent handling of appropriate matters.
- Consult with Clinical Nursing Directors, executives, and employees to identify problems, develop improvements, and maintain quality standards.
- Obtain and provide back-up information required to make strategic priorities progress smoothly, including analyzing, summarizing, and/or reviewing data; reporting findings, interpreting results, and/or making recommendations to assist achievement of objectives.
- Direct the scheduling of meetings and oversee that final preparations are complete and of a high standard.
- Attend leadership meetings as directed by the ACNO, summarize proceedings and efficiently distribute to those in attendance so that actions can be implemented and monitored.
- Assure compliance with regulatory and safety programs.
Required Qualifications*
- Master?s degree in nursing or related field such as Health Care Administration, Public Health, or Business.
- Bachelor?s degree in management, Health Care or related field. If Master?s is not in Nursing, a BSN is preferred.
- Current license to practice nursing in the State of Michigan.
- Considerable progressively responsible administrative experience is necessary.
- Demonstrated leadership in all aspects of project management is required.
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
- Experience with change management process.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the principles of Patient and Family-Centered Care with evidence of successful implementation of initiatives positively impacting patient care
- Demonstrated ability to lead efforts of complex change.
- Demonstrated knowledge of LEAN principles and methods
Desired Qualifications*
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse, interdisciplinary teams, and represent the ACNO as required to a wide range of external and internal parties is required.
- Advanced skills in computer software applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are necessary.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal, writing, punctuation, spelling, grammatical skills and proof-reading skills to facilitate and expedite communication is necessary.
- Experience in a complex bargained for work environment.
- Familiarity with continuous quality improvement.
- Experience in fundamental aspects of root cause analysis and successful action planning.
- Training and/ or experience in process improvement.
- Familiar with UMH policies and procedures.
- Familiar with UMH nursing specific policies, procedures and the UMPNC contract.
