Job Summary

The Center for Academic Innovation (CAI) at the University of Michigan (U-M) seeks a skilled Media Systems Engineer to lead the technical development and integration of media asset workflows, storage, and retrieval systems. This role will utilize various techniques including programming and using Generative AI to enhance operational efficiency across CAI's media asset management systems for online learning, XR programs, and digital archives. As Media Systems Engineer, you will develop custom applications, automate workflows, and integrate AI-powered solutions, directly collaborating with CAI's Media Technology, Media Design, and XR teams. You will be responsible for implementing scalable solutions that make use of various technologies including generative AI to improve media production and data management processes. You will report to the Associate Director of Media and Technology Solutions.

Responsibilities*

  • Design, implement, and maintain software applications to support the daily operation of CAI's Media Asset Management systems, equipment, and processes 
  • Use Generative AI tools to streamline media organization, metadata tagging, and search/retrieval functions
  • Collaborate on custom media asset workflows that use purpose-built software applications to increase productivity through process automation
  • Leverage Generative AI for predictive analytics, automated tagging, and search functions to improve media production workflows
  • Continuously assess and incorporate new AI-driven tools that enhance productivity and data accuracy
  • Manage and secure CAI's media asset storage systems, including LTO tape systems and cloud integrations
  • Develop sustainable digital asset archiving, backup, and retrieval solutions using advanced programming and AI-powered tools
  • Collaborate with Media Technology and Media Design teams to ensure team-wide adoption of optimized workflows
  • Provide training on AI tools and custom applications to improve system-wide productivity and data handling
  • Stay current with media technology trends, especially in AI, and apply best practices to CAI's media asset systems
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement cutting-edge tools and techniques that meet future media production and data management needs

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Systems Administration, Computer Science, Broadcasting or Media, Library and Information Sciences, or related field and 3 years of professional experience 
  • 3+ years of experience in software development, with proficiency in Python, JavaScript, or a similar language
  • Experience or willingness to learn API development, system integration, and working with cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud).
  • Strong interest and aptitude in exploring and utilizing emerging technologies, such as Generative AI and automation tools, to enhance workflows and data management.
  • Commitment to problem solving, teamwork, and the ability to act independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and work well in a multicultural and collaborative environment
  • Ability to manage relationships with multiple partners from a collaborative mindset
  • Familiarity with media production environments and asset management systems (MAM/DAM) is a plus
  • Experience with backup systems, networked storage, and data archiving processes is preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem solving, and adaptability skills within a rapidly changing media environment
  • Positive attitude and collaborative mindset to work effectively across interdisciplinary teams

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

Please Note: This is a 5-year term-limited position with the possibility of renewal depending on funding.

The mode of work for this position is Hybrid. The work requirements for this position allow both onsite and offsite work and you will have an expected regular and recurring onsite presence. On occasion, you may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by our center's policy and domain leadership or by your job requirements.

The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidate's education and experience.

Salary Information

The general salary range for this position is $82,000 - $90,000. You can expect to be paid a great compensation package. Factors used to determine salary include experience for the position and internal equity within the unit. You are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor agreement and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
