Health Services Research Fellowship Training Program

The Health Services Research Training program at the University of Michigan is seeking post-doctoral applicants to apply for our two-year training opportunity. This two-year training program is funded by a T32 training grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The start date of this position is between July 1st - September 1st 2025, however there is some flexibility on a case-by-case basis.

About the Program

The objective of this training program is to train the next generation of researchers to address issues related to quality, safety, effectiveness, access, and costs in the health system. There are four broad pedagogical competencies:

  1. Understanding the fundamentals of health services problems and issues;
  2. Understanding theory and methods from social science and health science disciplines, and how they can be applied to health services problems and issues;
  3. Conducting health services research, both in an independent and leading role as well as a supporting team-based role; and
  4. Developing oneself continually as a health services scholar.

The program is designed to produce independent investigators by providing a solid academic foundation, experience in the conduct of health services research, and socialization into the normative behavior of high quality, ethically sensitive research and its associated values. Trainees will have access to projects and mentors across a broad array of health services research topics. The University of Michigan is also home to a vast array of educational opportunities that are integrated into the training program, including but not limited to: educational and work in progress seminars, Stata Bootcamp, Leadership Development Program, and a Healthcare Administration Fellowship.

Trainees will gain research experience through didactic courses, participation on research teams led by faculty, seminar series, and independent development and leadership of their own research projects. From the beginning, trainees will also be immersed in one or more research teams led by their faculty mentors and given roles that will allow them to develop new skills and contribute meaningfully to various aspects of the project.

Trainees without a prior degree in health services have the opportunity to enroll in a masters degree program (e.g. Masters of Science in Health and Healthcare Research, Masters of Science in Clinical Research and Statistical Design). Trainees will receive stipends for tuition support each year, as well as for living costs and conference travel. The stipend to support living costs level is set by the NIH and is based on post graduate year level. Trainees will be expected to dedicate 40 hours per week to research training. Those with continuing clinical commitments will be allowed to conduct clinical training in the allowable additional 25% of their time (e.g. 10 hours per week).

Required Qualifications*

To be considered for this program applicants must have completed a terminal clinical or research degree (e.g. MD, PhD, DO) by the start of the program and must be eligible to work in the United States.
