The Michigan Medicine Office of Development raises an average of $200 million annually, which helps us to be a change agent of the world. The Office of Development supports an overall culture of flexibility with gift officers expected to be outside of their home offices meeting with donors, faculty or colleagues a minimum of three days each week.
Under the guidance of the Senior Associate Director of Development, this position will set the strategic direction for fundraising efforts for the University of Michigan?s nine basic science departments. The Assistant Director will be charged with leading fundraising efforts to increase support for all nine departments. The Assistant Director will manage and solicit a portfolio of major gift prospects, including gifts to support professorships, research, faculty and trainee support, and capital.
What You'll Do
Strategic Planning & Collaboration (40%)
- Implement a comprehensive multi-year fundraising plan to increase philanthropic for the Basic Sciences and its affiliated units.
- Create an annual plan for fundraising by working closely in coordination and collaboration with chairs and directors, faculty, and administrative officers.
- Identify and qualify, new major and planned gift prospects by developing and executing long-range and short-range strategy, producing a continuous stream of donors capable of making significant gifts.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of the Medical Development and Basic Sciences department priorities and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific medical development and University needs.
- Work with limited supervision to accomplish goals by independently setting priorities in order to meet deadlines.
- Work in a fast-paced environment by adapting to ever-changing priorities and at times working under pressure.
- Develop/build relationships with department leadership and faculty that will help tell/define the successes and impact of the department to share with donors and friends.
- Collaborate with Corporate and Foundation Relations team members and leaders to identify strategic partnerships and/or opportunities for faculty to drive key priorities.
Donor & Prospect Management (40%)
- Personally maintain a portfolio of major giving prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, university leaders, and volunteers.
- Plan systematic, appropriate, and effective solicitation strategies for major and planned gift prospects.
- Increase philanthropic support for research, basic science, and faculty support for the benefit of the Basic Sciences Department.
- Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate, or make solicitations, and provide effective stewardship.
Community Building (20%)
- Coordinate and facilitate activity that will directly result in prospect identification, engagement, and successful solicitations, including advising chairs, department heads and development colleagues on the culture, expectations and needs of medical development constituents.
- Maintain strong lines of communication with colleagues in other Health System and Medical School units, the Office of University Development, and appropriate schools and colleges across the University to ensure effective collaboration and synergy in achieving fundraising goals and objectives.
- Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and other development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting the overall Health System campaign goals.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues throughout Michigan Medicine and University, by demonstrating leadership in the development community.
- Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing the Health System.
- Participate in Medical Development events as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree.
- At least three years of experience in fundraising, public relations, and/or sales and marketing, public relations, or alumni relations.
- Strong writing skills with an ability to understand and convey the impact and potential impact of scientific research on medicine and health.
- Excellent communication skills with comfortability with occasional public speaking.
- Proven ability to use discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
- Candidate will be required to have reliable internet service.
- Periodic travel for donor engagement, conference attendance, etc.
Desired Qualifications*
- Knowledge, familiarity, and comfort with science-related research themes found in the basic science arena.
- Development experience in an academic health system setting or science/health foundation with a comprehensive development program.
Work Locations
The onsite location for this position is an office suite at the 777 Building. This provides free, on-site parking for staff.
This position is a flexible, hybrid position. Candidates will need to live in a commutable distance to the office and the expectation is to work outside of their home offices meeting with donors, faculty, or colleagues a minimum of three days each week, except while traveling on university business. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on business needs.

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
