Job Summary

The position involves development of custom instrumentation to support vision research experiments, including consultation, design and fabrication. The instrument maker will work directly with scientists and students engaged in vision research to build new equipment and maintain existing equipment. The instrument maintains the machine shop and other select instruments at the Kellogg Eye Center. The instrument maker collaborates with technical staff at Kellogg to build equipment.

Responsibilities*

  • Design and fabricate precision instruments for research.
  • Maintain and repair certain specialized instrumentation. 
  • Maintain instrument shop operations, including; scheduling and coordinating online work orders, ordering and stocking supplies, and routine equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain daily log of ongoing and completed projects.
  • Operate machine shop in a safe manner and in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Required Qualifications*

  • 5 years of experience as a prototype machinist or scientific instrument maker.
  • Must be able to work off of blue prints as well as hand-sketched designs and/or verbal instructions.
  • Skills and experience in the use of manual and CNC machine tools, sheet metal equipment and surface grinder.
  • Experience in machining both metals and plastics.
  • Ability to perform hands-on assembly of prototype instruments.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Technical trade school  or 2-year college degree in machinist program.
  • Proficient with computer added design programs.
  • Proficient with design documentation.
  • Proficient with basic word processing software and common email applications.

Background Screening
