Job Summary

As the Labor Relations Representative Intermediate within Staff Human Resources, you will support and facilitate union-management contract negotiations, administer collective bargaining agreements, and resolve employee grievances to promote harmonious labor relations at the University. Reporting to the Director of Labor Relations, you will advise management on labor relations practices, interpret labor agreements, and support employee-related matters to ensure compliance with legal and contractual obligations. You will provide expertise to address labor and employment issues institution-wide.

Responsibilities*

  • Support contract negotiations and the administration of labor contracts, primarily non-academic though may lend support to health system and/or academic contracts.
  • Interpret collective bargaining agreements and represent management in grievance settlements.
  • Help with the preparation and support for arbitrations and matters before the Michigan Employment Relations Commission (MERC).
  • Advise managers and leaders on labor relations, contract compliance, and disciplinary matters.
  • Develop and deliver educational materials and courses on labor relations and contract interpretation.
  • Monitor labor relations trends and maintain records for reporting purposes.
  • Partner with administrative units to provide data reports and analysis.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on University-wide labor management concerns.
  • Promote an inclusive and harmonious work environment, respecting diverse perspectives.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree required in a related field such as Business Administration, Higher Education Administration, Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations, Labor and Employment Relations, or equivalent training or experience.
  • 1+ years of professional experience working in a complex environment with employee or labor relations responsibilities
  • 1+ years of professional experience participating in the collective bargaining process
  • Demonstrated work experience in labor relations including union/management relations and the interpretation of policies or negotiated contracts.
  • Demonstrated general work experience managing multiple projects, maintaining positive business relations, and problem-solving workplace issues.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and to maintain positive working relationships with all levels of management and staff.
  • Demonstrated excellent written, verbal, analytical skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Expertise functioning in a team-oriented environment.

Work Locations

Will require travel to multiple locations on & off campus, which may include Flint and Dearborn campuses.  Will occasionally require domestic travel.  Hybrid work may be allowed; flexible work arrangements are reviewed annually and may be subject to change based on business needs.
