Job Summary
The Department of Pediatric Endocrinology is accepting applications for a part-time (50%) research support position in Dr. Durga Singer's lab. The laboratory uses a mouse model of diet induced obesity to better understand cellular and endocrine dynamics of high fat intake leading to metabolic diseases.

Responsibilities*
The part-time Research Lab Specialist Associate candidate will be expected to perform the following critical functions and techniques:
- Conducting experiments on human blood samples including flow cytometry, RNA isolation, RNA sequencing analysis, and cell culture studies focused understanding monocyte function and activation state in children with obesity
- Data management for research projects which includes metabolic study data, hormone assays, and the data conducted from the above experiments
- General laboratory duties (dishwashing, labeling, preparation of solutions), data collection including maintenance of samples, analysis (graphing and statistics), quality control, and involvement in manuscript/grant preparation. Experience with clinical sample handling would be of benefit
- Assist the recruitment of children and adolescence for studies in the Singer Lab focused on recruitment of lean and obese children, those with an A1c > 5.7%, and those with type 2 diabetes in primary care and subspecialty clinics. Recruitment will include advertising, screening possible participants and assisting in scheduling for visits
- Perform testing and analysis of data from metabolic challenge tests, surveys, dietary recalls, and immune marker studies that result from visits
- Maintain thorough experimental records and protocols; maintain detailed and organized research notes, write research manuscripts and grant proposals
- Provide laboratory management support, ordering, updating assay protocols, and keeping electronic files of lab supply and chemical inventory
- Collaborate with other investigators for analysis, interpretation and presentation of results
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in a science-related field. Master's preferred
- Minimum 2 years of related work experience
- Recent experience and publications in metabolism, immunology or physiology
- Specific skills in human blood sample handling, metabolic studies and immunology assays (flow cytometry, flow sorting, cell culture)
- Lab experience in molecular and cell biology techniques including cells and tissue processing, tissue sectioning, DNA/RNA isolation, and microscopy skills
- Excellent communication skills (writing and speaking)
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's degree in the field of public health or health sciences
- Experience managing the daily operations of a research lab under the delegated authority of the PI. The applicant will be expected to work as part of a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative research team that interacts with other laboratories across the University of Michigan
