Job Summary

A postdoctoral position is available with the Mixed Methods Program (MMP) in the Department of Family Medicine. The MMP was co-founded by Professors Michael D. Fetters and John W. Creswell in 2015.  The goal of this post-doctoral training position is to prepare future mixed methods research methodology researchers and leaders. Candidates should have a strong interest in becoming an applied research methodologists in social science and/or health sciences. During this 2-year position, the MMP fellow will work  closely with the program director(s), associate director, a co-mentor of the post-doctoral trainee's choosing, faculty, and staff in the MMP. 

The MMP's vision is to advance the field of mixed methods research to address the world's complex problems.  MMP aims to foster innovative methodologies, teaching and mentoring, and team science among mixed methods scholars and practitioners across disciplines through its core activities, which include: 1) providing consultation to faculty who seek to use mixed methods research and evaluation; 2) offering training in mixed methods research through national and international mixed methods research workshops; 3) providing mixed methods research and evaluation methodology consultations to scholars and researchers. 

The postdoctoral training will include: 1) a mentor-based mixed methods research apprenticeship focused on empirical projects chosen in conjunction with mentors; 2) a professional development plan with the goal of becoming an independent investigator with skills in integrating qualitative and quantitative approaches; and 3) participation on existing grants utilizing mixed methods. Training experiences will include: grant preparation, project management, data collection and analysis, scientific presentations, professional skills development, career planning, and the ethical conduct of research. The trainee will have about 50-60% protected time (negotiable) and support for developing an area of the trainee's choosing.  The salary is consistent with the NIH pay scale for postdoctoral training. The postdoctoral position includes full U-M health benefits and discretionary funds for conference travel and research expenses.

Responsibilities*

The postdoctoral research fellow responsibilities include: participating in ongoing mixed methods research projects within the Department of Family Medicine or U-M, working on mixed methods publications, assisting in the organization and delivery of mixed methods workshops to national and international audiences, collaborating in the mentorship of scholars developing mixed methods projects, assisting in the national/international consulting service of the Program, regularly attending and occasionally presenting at the Qualitative and Mixed Methods Learning Lab meetings, and writing an application for extramural funding. These responsibilities will be reviewed periodically and revised as appropriate to meet the needs of the fellow and the MMP. 

Required Qualifications*

  • Ph.D., M.D., or other terminal degree in social, health sciences or related field; 
  • Experience in research methodology; Strong quantitative skills; 
  • Strong qualitative skills; 
  • Experience/training in mixed methods research; 
  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate professionalism, respectful communication, and a commitment to team-based work. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Methodological training and experience in mixed methods research; 
  • Evidence of research productivity and experience with grants and grant applications
  • Applicant will have a content area in the health or social sciences competitive for federal funding applications.

Background Screening
