Job Summary

The successful candidate is expected to lead studies, contribute to grant application preparation, and manuscript writing. The candidate will assist in evaluating lab methods, procedures, and techniques based on established objectives as well as analyzing data using complex statistical computer software, and assists in instruction and training of laboratory personnel, as needed.

Responsibilities*

  • A term-limited position for a Research Laboratory Technician-Intermediate is available in the department of anesthesiology to study the neuroscientific basis of sleep-wake states, anesthetic-induced unconsciousness, psychedelic states, and sleep-anesthesia interactions. The successful candidate is expected to lead the studies that may involve intracranial microdialysis and open flow microperfusion in freely moving rats, HPLC quantification of neurotransmitter levels, electrophysiological sleep-wake recordings, and immunohistochemical (and/or fluorescence) staining of frozen brain sections. 
  • Additional duties include daily observation and postoperative care of the animals, accurate maintenance of surgical records, animal husbandry forms, and communication with veterinary staff. Daily observation and postsurgical record keeping may require short trips to the animal facility over weekend days and holidays.
  • The successful applicant is expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills, and a strong enthusiasm for learning and developing new experimental approaches. The trainee will have the opportunity to work in a highly collaborative and collegial environment and will be supported by active mentoring and any additional training required for the successful completion of the project and career advancement. 

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelors degree with a minimum of 3-4 years of prior research experience working in a behavioral neuroscience laboratory is required.
  • Expertise and in-depth experience in conducting studies in freely moving rats using intracranial microdialysis, open flow microperfusion, HPLC quantification of neurotransmitter levels including acetylcholine and nitric oxide, electrophysiological sleep-wake recordings, and immunohistochemical (and/or fluorescence) staining of frozen brain sections. 
  • Demonstrated track record of productivity as evident from peer reviewed research publications.
  • The successful candidate must have the motivation and ability to work under minimal supervision. Good communication skills and ability to work well with team members are critical.

Modes of Work

Additional Information

This is a term-limited position for one year, with the possibility of extension based the availability of funds and need. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF)  benefits.  This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
