Job Summary
The Human Performance & Sport Science Center (HPSSC) and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan has a full-time job opportunity for a sport scientist to join our team and support the newly established HPSSC Athlete Innovation Laboratory (HAIL). In partnership with Michigan Athletics, the Athlete Innovation Lab will provide core assessment, research, and educational opportunities in support of the multidisciplinary mission of the HPSSC.
We are looking for a detail-oriented, self-motivated individual to administer lab-based metabolic and biomechanical assessments, manage day-to-day activities in sport science-related and athlete performance-based research studies, work with a multi-disciplinary team of investigators, clinicians, coaching staff, and student athletes to manage daily laboratory activities, interface with participants, and to complete laboratory tasks in a timely manner.
Responsibilities*
- Collect and analyze human movement data in-lab and in-field using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors, treadmills, metabolic carts, blood lactate monitors, and urine and/or blood samples before, during, and after exercise,
- Process and analyze above-mentioned data.
- Supervise, mentor, and review the work of students working in the laboratory, including assistance with training users in equipment operation and lab techniques.
- Manage and coordinate scheduling and assessments with human subjects.
- Manage day-to-day operations within the laboratory, including maintaining organized laboratory environment, ordering of supplies, maintaining laboratory equipment to ensure reliability, quality control and validity of the data collection processes, and other typical laboratory organizational tasks.
Required Qualifications*
Requirements for this position are:
- Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Engineering, or related discipline (Master's degree preferred).
- 1-3 years of experience in a related field
- Technical expertise in biomechanical and/or metabolic testing and adequate programming skills (e.g. MATLAB, R, etc.).
- Excellent organizational skills with the capacity to manage and coordinate multiple study-related tasks concurrently.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with others in a dynamic, collaborative environment are required. This position involves close interaction with faculty, staff, trainees, athletes, and practitioners on a timely basis.
- Applications with prior research or appropriate clinical experience will be given preference.
Physical abilities needed for this position require applications to be able to:
- Help move laboratory equipment and test materials up to 50 lbs.
- Demonstrate a variety of physical tasks (jumping, running, etc.) in-lab and under on-field conditions.
- Position self to apply sensors and other equipment on subjects (e.g. kneeling, squatting, sitting on floor, etc.).
- Remain stationary at a computer for an entire shift to analyze/process data.
