Job Summary

The Division of Diagnostic Genetics and Genomics (DGG) in the Department of Pathology at Michigan Medicine is seeking a talented Applications Programmer Analyst Lead (Software Engineer Lead) to join our growing informatics team. As a DGG team member, you will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with experts in cancer genomics and clinical informatics to design, build, validate, and deploy production-grade clinical software applications. As DGG scales its clinical testing operation, you will help level up our software development practices by enhancing CI/CD protocols and developing scalable solutions to unique and systemic problems. You will help us build and scale critical infrastructure (e.g., clinical review applications, sample-tracking workflows) to support myriad data-rich molecular profiling workflows, and contribute to a culture of collaboration and excellence through your engagement with DGG teammates.

Responsibilities*

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

  • Software Development & Integration: Design, develop, and implement advanced software tools to optimize system integration and efficiency.
  • Technical Expertise & Support: Provide expert consultation, troubleshoot issues, and refine software workflows for maximum performance.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance: Monitor test performance, ensure regulatory compliance (CLIA, CAP), and drive quality control initiatives.
  • Leadership & Management: Mentor team members, oversee training, competency assessments, and contribute to staff engagement.
  • Operational Oversight: Assist in hiring, onboarding, performance evaluations, and strategic improvements for departmental efficiency.
  • Strategic Planning: Collaborate with leadership to enhance operations, assess new technologies, and recommend future changes.
  • Technical Resource: Act as a key liaison for internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders regarding software and operational needs.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Support departmental initiatives and perform other duties as needed.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

  • Supervision is received from the divisions? laboratory, informatics, and operations directors.
  • Functional supervision may be received from team manager or a lead analyst.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

  • Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over Applications Programmer Analyst Associates, and Intermediates.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires frequent standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time.
  • Potential for hybrid and/or fully remote options

Required Qualifications*

In order to be considered for this position the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, bioinformatics, computer science, or related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • 7 to 10 years of increasingly complex business programming experience in a business environment is required. 
  • A strong work ethic, a desire to learn, and a positive attitude.
  • Proficiency with at least one scripting language (preferably Python)
  • Experience using software version control tools (e.g., gitlab, github, bitbucket) to manage development and production code.
  • Experience working with container orchestration tools (e.g., Docker).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience with implementing CI/CD frameworks (e.g., CircleCI, Jenkins).
  • Experience with Designing, building, and/or scaling SQLServer, MySQL, or Postgres databases.
  • Experience with designing and implementing production-grade RESTful APIs.
  • Familiarity with building and deploying software applications in HIPAA-compliant compute environment.
  • Dedicated front-end or back-end software development expertise.
  • Experience leveraging cloud compute resources (e.g. AWS, GCP) to support data processing pipelines and/or web applications.
  • Familiarity with next generation sequencing workflow management frameworks (e.g., Nextflow, Snakemake).
  • Experience building high-quality data visualization approaches for data-rich web applications.

Work Schedule

This full time, 40 hour position will be M-F, and is exempt which may require additional hours on weekends and off shifts to complete projects or work assignments that may include deadlines.  It may also include on-call.

Modes of Work

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
