Job Summary
The Department of Recreational Services is seeking student and non-student lifeguards for part-time summer help in the Recreation Center pool. Shifts may be days or evenings, weekdays or weekends, depending on availability.
Responsibilities*
Responsibilities include:
- Creating a safe environment
- Administering first aid and CPR/AED, while rescuing swimmers in distress when necessary
- Perform water testing to ensure pool chemicals are at appropriate levels
- Enforcement of facility policies and pool regulations
- Maintain cleanliness of pool deck area and report issues to supervisor
- Attend scheduled in-service training sessions
Required Qualifications*
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or ability to obtain prior to start date
- Ability to swim 300 yards (200 crawl and 100 backstroke)
- Ability to retrieve submerged object from deep end of pool
- Ability to tread water for 2-minutes
Desired Qualifications*
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification
- Previous lifeguarding experience
Modes of Work
Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan

Background Screening
The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks. Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
