Job Summary

The Biology Department is seeking students to serve as Laboratory Assistants for teaching labs during the Fall 2025 semester. These positions are available on a per-semester basis. Weekly work schedules will vary depending on the course the assistant is supporting. Laboratory Assistants will report directly to the Natural Sciences Laboratory Supervisor and the instructor for their assigned course.


 

Responsibilities*

The primary responsibility of the Laboratory Assistant is to support faculty during teaching labs. Key duties include:

  • Assisting students by answering questions and providing guidance during lab activities.
  • Offering support with laboratory setup and ensuring all procedures are followed accurately.
  • Promoting and maintaining proper laboratory practices and cleanliness.
  • Restocking supplies as needed to ensure a smooth flow of the lab session.
  • Monitoring and enforcing adherence to all safety protocols.

Additionally, this role may involve assisting faculty with material preparation before their assigned lab sections. Tasks may include setting up lab stations, ensuring proper lab maintenance, and restocking inventory as required.

Required Qualifications*

  • Must be a currently enrolled UM-Flint student or recently graduated, within the last 6 months
  • Successful completion and understanding of the course that is being assigned, equivalent experience, or higher level biology labs
  • A demonstrated ability to apply laboratory safety rules
  • Must be friendly and approachable to all members of the classroom
  • Recommendation by a lab instructor from the Biology Department

Desired Qualifications*

  • Excellent communication skills
  • A strong understanding of the material being presented
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues that may arise in the lab

Modes of Work

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan

Background Screening
