Job Summary
The Assistant Director for Application Review is responsible for the hiring, training, and supervision of a remote team of 220+ application review specialists who evaluate first year and transfer applications. This position provides annual application review training for the recruitment team and all new recruitment staff as a part of onboarding processes.
The Assistant Director is tasked with monitoring application volume, application variance and accuracy, and productivity across the recruitment team and application review specialist team to ensure first year and transfer applications are evaluated in accordance with the guidelines of our schools/colleges and that the deadlines and mission of the office are met. Reporting to the Senior Associate Director, the position will also be responsible for managing the cross campus, non-degree, and guest application review processes handled by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (OUA).

Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Office of Enrollment Management (OEM) manages U-M's enrollment function to efficiently optimize students' experiences throughout their engagement, from prospect to alumni. The division collaborates with campus partners, faculty, and staff in support of the university's mission.
OEM comprises a dedicated team of more than 200 full-time staff members and up to 400 additional student and temporary staff and is structured in five operational units - the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the Office of Financial Aid, the Office of New Student Programs, the Office of the Registrar, and OEM Administration. Responsibilities*
25% Directs and monitors the University's application evaluation process. Using reports and through supervision, monitors application flow to ensure timely and consistent evaluations. Works closely with OUA Processing leadership staff to maximize efficiency of the application evaluation flow & credit evaluation processes. Assists with new technology solutions and serves on committees as expert for application review workflows and training.
20 % Provides leadership and supervision to regular, benefits eligible team members and a large team of remote, temporary application review specialists. Provides functional and administrative oversight; responsible for planning and implementing staffing cycles in partnership with OUA leadership and HR.
20% Provides routine feedback, formal training and training updates, and periodic evaluation of work for all recruitment team staff. Partners with other assistant directors to manage performance of staff members as necessary.
20% Supports the validation of applications and/or the committee review processes. Manages the deferment request process, enrollment deposit extensions/waiver requests, grade review & test score verification process, and the crime & conduct review process. Other duties as assigned.
15% Manages unit liaisons for assigned Schools and Colleges and/or evaluates applications. Responds to challenging admissions referral cases for all units and programs. Represents OUA at various meetings with internal and external constituents.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Three years of experience in higher education, preferably in enrollment management or undergraduate admissions.
- Knowledge of recruiting policies and procedures, with understanding of holistic admissions evaluation processes for first-year and transfer applicants.
- Previous supervisory and leadership experience. Demonstrated ability to lead, train and work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with a focus on process efficiency and improvement.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple responsibilities and deadlines.
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's degree, preferably in higher education or a related field.
- Proficiency in utilizing data to inform admissions decisions and evaluation processes.
- Extensive knowledge of Slate CRM.
Modes of Work
The Office of Enrollment Management requires a hybrid work arrangement of a minimum of three days on-site and two remote days. Thursday is an on-site work day for all divisional staff, and this leadership role may require daily work onsite at certain times. Learn more about the work modes.
