Job Summary

The Program Manager for Workforce Development will lead the design, implementation, and management of innovative workforce development programs at the U-M Center for Innovation (UMCI) in Detroit. This role will focus on building high-impact training initiatives that support Detroit residents in developing in-demand skills and competencies, preparing them for well-paying jobs, and contributing to the city's economic growth.

You will report to the Director, Academic Content Strategy.

Responsibilities*

  • Develop in-person and hybrid learning options that support career growth.
  • Align programs with industry needs in fields like technology, leadership, and project management.
  • Partner with instructional designers, faculty, and community groups to create engaging learning experiences.
  • Oversee program budget, learner support, and program evaluation.
  • Manage custom training solutions for companies seeking employee upskilling or reskilling.
  • Lead recruitment, enrollment, and engagement strategies to ensure high participation.
  • Oversee logistics, budgeting, and quality control of program operations.
  • Track program performance and job placement outcomes to drive improvements.
  • Support marketing and outreach initiatives.
  • Collaborate with faculty, employers, workforce boards, and industry leaders to ensure programs meet broad stakeholder goals and needs.
  • Work with businesses to integrate apprenticeships, internships, and mentorships into training programs.

Required Qualifications*

  • 5+ years of experience in workforce development, adult education, corporate training, or a related area.
  • Experience developing and delivering successful workforce development/educational programs.
  • Understanding of labor market trends, industry-aligned skill development, and workforce development best practices.
  • Experience working with subject matter experts, businesses, workforce agencies, and/or community stakeholders to design, develop, and run educational and training programs.
  • Experience with project management tools and techniques.

Work Locations

The position is designed as a hybrid role with a blend of remote and onsite responsibilities, requiring the presence of individuals for on-site engagement and collaboration with Detroit's community leaders and organizations a few days a week

Modes of Work

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
