Job Summary

The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of General Medicine, is seeking an experienced and creative Research Area Specialist to work closely with a research team focusing on contextual factors impacting midlife health and disability. Key activities require close collaboration with research team members, other departments and divisions within Michigan Medicine and University of Michigan, as well as international organizations.

Responsibilities*

The job responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Systematically analyze and code qualitative data from interviews, including identifying key themes and patterns within the text to inform research insights 
  • Conduct literature reviews and scoping reviews related to grant objectives and population of interest. Includes setting up Covidence application, review criteria, data extraction form, and final data extraction.
  • Prepare and deliver analyzable geographical contextual datasets
  • Perform data cleaning, quality checks, and merging procedures on and prepare data sets for different statistical analyses or sponsor reports 
  • Develop data visualizations to effectively communicate data in reports, flowcharts, and other formats
  • Identify and resolve time-sensitive data issues
  • Summarize, interpret, and present results to internal and external team members
  • Prepare and maintain technical reports to document data management process and analytic file characteristics
  • Work collaboratively with project managers, data analysts and Principal Investigators (PIs) to understand project goals, data requirements, and objectives
  • Track progress of activities and regularly update PI and team on progress and participate in team meetings (virtual and in-person)
  • Collaborating with research and study teams to provide input on study design, execution, and analysis, while also advising on the selection and implementation of technologies and methodologies to optimize data processes
  • Assisting in the writing and reviewing of manuscripts and grant proposals

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in data science, health-related sciences, or related fields
  • 4-5 years of experience working in health-related academic research, with a demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage multiple project requirements to deadline
  • Demonstrated ability to perform data management based on study design under PI or lead statistician guidance, including working with data structures and linkages between data sources
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a successful team member
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and stakeholders

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in data science, health-related sciences, or related fields
  • At least one year of practical experience in qualitative data management and analysis, using use of MAXQDA or other qualitative software
  • At least one year of practical experience in using Covidence software, including establishing exclusion and inclusion criteria and other review parameters, importing full-text articles, data extraction forms, exporting results, consensus resolution, inter-rater agreement, and visualization of themes and findings
  • At least one year of practical experience with programming using STATA, or other quantitative software

Work Schedule

This position offers a flexible work schedule, including remote work, but it requires some office presence (weekly or bi-weekly).

Additional Information

This is a term-limited appointment. At the end of the stated term, your appointment will terminate, and will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.

Background Screening
