What You'll Do

Tax Position Opening - The University of Michigan, one of the nation's leading public universities, is seeking applicants for a tax advisor position in the Tax Compliance and Planning Office. This office provides tax consulting services and compliance support to the University of Michigan (U-M) and its affiliates. U-M includes Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn campuses as well as Michigan Medicine. Affiliates include the University Musical Society, Alumni Association, Michigan Health Corporation and U-M Health and their subsidiaries, e.g., University of Michigan Health-West, Sparrow Health System, among others. This office manages tax risks arising from various operations, including the long-term portfolio, tax-exempt bonds, athletics, healthcare as well as keeps the university in good standing with tax compliance with all federal, state, local and international taxing jurisdictions.

Position Description - This position supports U-M's fundamental commitment to the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and conduct while ensuring the implementation of tax compliance with the rules, regulations, and responsibilities. This tax advisor position will assist with tax compliance, including filing tax returns and related matters for U-M and its affiliates, and will work collaboratively with the tax team to implement best practices that support our strategic priorities and initiatives. This position reports to the Tax Director.
 

Responsibilities*

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Research and keep current with the tax law and reporting responsibilities.  
  • Develop 'best practices', including policies and tool kits in managing resulting tax risks. 
  • Communicate with stakeholders, including schools, colleges and units as well as with legal and tax representatives, e.g., with investment firms, taxing agencies, and institutional peers. 
  • Prepare and review various federal, state and international tax returns and forms for multiple entities, including exempt organizations, partnerships, taxable corporations, charitable vehicles, such as charitable remainder trusts, as well as multiple activities and transactions, including investments in foreign entities, among others.

Required Qualifications*

The candidate must possess the following:

Bachelors degree in business administration, finance or accounting, or an equivalent combination of education is required. A CPA certification or a masters degree in accounting or a related field is desired. Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with a variety of individuals and units.  Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of staff.  Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet pressing due dates.  Excellent analytical and independent problem solving skills.  
 

Modes of Work

The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
