Division Overview

The Clinical & Revenue Cycle IT (CRC) Division of Health Information Technology Clinical Documentation Team at Michigan Medicine is seeking a candidate to fulfill the role of Business Analyst Senior. The Senior Business Analyst is a pivotal role, responsible for leveraging both Epic system configuration expertise and regulatory compliance knowledge to enhance clinical systems and support patient care delivery. This position requires a unique blend of skills in clinical information systems, regulatory reporting, and project management to effectively meet the strategic goals of the organization.

Job Summary

Health Information Technology & Services (HITS) plays a role in the success of Michigan Medicine by providing clinicians, educators, researchers, students, and staff with technology-related information, products, and support. HITS also provides institutional expertise related to IT strategy, security, infrastructure, and resource management. 

Responsibilities*

Inpatient Clinical Documentation Epic System Configuration

  • Utilize expertise in Epic, including proficiency in Epic Clinical Documentation to plan, design, develop, implement, and maintain clinical systems.
  • Participate in system upgrades, maintenance, and configuration, ensuring systems meet enterprise goals.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams, including nurses', ancillary staff, and physicians, to ensure the Epic system meets clinical user needs.

Regulatory Compliance and Reporting:

  • Implement, track, and report on inpatient Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Electronic Clinical Quality Measures (eCQMs), Promoting Interoperability, Process and Structural Measures, Patient Reported Outcome -Performance Measures (PRO-PM). In Collaboration with Quality and reporting teams, maintain and update dashboards for Promoting Interoperability, working closely with Quality and Reporting teams.
  • Attend and contribute to internal meetings w/ Quality, and Reporting, along with collaborative meetings with Epic TS meetings and other MiChart (Epic) teams. Attend webinars for staying up to date on regulatory requirements, compliance, and new measure discussions (e.g., Epic Carrot Webinars, Medisolv sessions).
     

Project and Stakeholder Management:

  • Lead meetings, prioritize tasks, manage project plans work within specific timelines, and facilitate conflict resolution to ensure successful project execution.
  • Work independently to analyze, compare, and evaluate different courses of action, making independent decisions that significantly impact business operations.
  • Mentor and support less experienced Business Analysts to foster a collaborative and efficient working environment.
     

Documentation and Communication:

  • Document changes, build processes, and maintain comprehensive records for system specifications, Epic checklists, and mapping updates.
  • Effectively communicate with various stakeholders, including regulatory teams, clinicians, and IT personnel, to provide updates, gather feedback, and refine system functionality.
     

Continuous Improvement and Knowledge Development:

  • Remain up to date with CMS proposed rules and new regulations that may affect the Epic system or regulatory reporting practices.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis to identify and validate required measures, ensuring compliance with evolving healthcare regulations. 

Required Qualifications*

Requirements for Senior Level

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of IT related experience.

Requirements for Intermediate Level

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-3 Years of IT related experience

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a clinical area, Health Informatics, Business Administration, or a related field. Advanced degrees are a plus.
  • In-depth understanding of healthcare compliance regulations, including familiarity with Joint Commission standards and their application in a healthcare setting, are recommended.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team required.
  • Excellent communication, mentoring, and project management skills required.
  • Ability to analyze complex data and develop actionable insights required.
  • This position will require Clinical Documentation proficiency through Epic.
  • Strong understanding of electronic health records (EHR) systems and healthcare workflows.
  • In-depth understanding of Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements and guidelines.
  • Understanding HIPAA regulations and data security best practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with clinical staff, IT teams, and stakeholders.
