Job Summary

As a Data Manager Senior at the School of Information (UMSI), you will contribute to the Information Technologies unit.

You will create procedures, considering resource capacity and limitations, time, and form to support the School, working at the highest technical level of most phases of systems analysis while considering the possible effects of the application of technology to the business environment.

Reporting to the UMSI IT Associate Director, you will work with our Office of Academic and Student Affairs (OASA) team. You will gain expertise in OASA roles, systems, and workflows to manage the systems and development of OASA systems. You will also have depth of knowledge of the OASA team and responsibilities to identify areas for automation and development.

The UMSI IT unit is designed to provide rapid services and data to team members at the University of Michigan. The unit is responsible for all non-hardware infrastructure, such as educational technologies and data flows between University systems, 3rd parties tools and collaboration with campus partners. Responsibilities*

  • Be the data manager owner for several different systems at UMSI.
  • Manage course projection systems.
  • Collaborate with team members from student services, academic departments, and campus service units to gather and analyze system requirements.
  • Work with technical teams to design and implement student service systems, ensuring they meet functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Provide support for end-users (students, faculty, and staff) in using student and non-student service systems.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience interpreting data, creating applicable reports, and developing solutions.
  • 5+ years of experience working in interdisciplinary product teams
  • Proficiency in simplifying technical concepts for diverse audiences, including all levels of management and matrix organizations.
  • Experience building Python scripts linking different systems; SQL, and report building.
  • Experience with Jira for task management and tracking progress in Agile environments.
  • Demonstrated skill in collaboratively gathering, documenting, and translating both business and technical requirements for enterprise-level systems, while effectively guiding their successful implementation.

Modes of Work

Additional Information

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

This is an in-person position, with 4 days on site and 1 day remote. You may travel to multiple locations on and off campus. The main office workspace for this position is located in the Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building. Punctual and regular attendance is required. You may be required to work during non-business hours and on weekends based on the requirements for your position. 

The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $95,000. Salary is determined by direct relevant experience and demonstrated past performance results while ensuring equity on our team. You are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor consistency and transparency throughout the recruiting process.

Typical Day:
You come into the office and start a meeting with some OASA staff on a reporting need, you pull some data and build a report and write a quick summary. You have a meeting about adding some forms to Coursedog and check with your UMSI-IT colleagues to make sure the field changes being requested won't create conflict. Afterward you come to a meeting on recruitment efforts and propose a novel way to link 3 different data sources to reach out to a new population. You work with pair code with our developer to build the integration and start automating reports.
