Job Summary
The Philosophy Department in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for a part time Lecturer I position to teach PHIL 196, First Year Seminar and PHIL 345, Language and Mind in Fall 2025 term and TBD sections of critical reasoning or ethics courses in Winter 2026 term. This is a non-tenure track position offered for two terms only.
About the Department of Philosophy - Michigan has ranked among the top five philosophy doctoral programs nationally and top six departments internationally in assessments spanning five decades, with strengths in all the main areas of philosophy - ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of language & mind, philosophy of science, and aesthetics - and in the history of Western philosophy, from antiquity to the present.
Responsibilities*
Duties and responsibilities for the Lecturer I position in Fall 2025 term are to teach PHIL 196 'First Year Seminar' and PHIL 345 'Language and Mind' lecture and instruct one discussion section, hold office hours and handle routine matters related to instruction. The responsibilities for Winter 2026 are instructing sections of an undergraduate course or courses in critical reasoning or ethics at a similar level of part-time effort.
Required Qualifications*
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Philosophy, or a related field and have extensive background in moral psychology with a preferred interest in metaethics, ethics, philosophy of psychology, and cognitive psychology. Teaching experience at the college/university level is required. Applicants will be selected based upon demonstrated subject matter expertise, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and departmental needs.
Desired Qualifications*
At least two years of teaching experience at the college/university level is desired. Experience teaching courses in Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Science, logic and introductory Philosophy is desired.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
