Job Summary

This andrologist will be mainly responsible for the daily operations of the Andrology and Endocrine portion of the ART lab, including reproductive hormone testing, andrology testing, and therapeutic procedures. This individual will join a team of andrologists, embryologists, and fertility healthcare providers with a longstanding track record of successful teamwork and program building. Responsibilities will include: i) participation in a robust QM/QC/QA/QI laboratory program, ii) endocrine testing, iii) andrology lab diagnostic testing, such as semen analysis and therapeutic technologies, such as sperm preparation for IUI and IVF, iv) sperm cryopreservation and thawing, v) advanced procedures of testicular sperm process and vi) frozen specimen logistic. Participation is expected in basic laboratory maintenance, safety, and application of high reliability principles, and work with clinic staff to improve patient quality of care, safety, and clinic workflows. Opportunities exist to participate in translational research and future cross-training in embryology. This position directly reports to the Lab Manager/Laboratory Director.

Responsibilities*

  • Perform qualitative and quantitative Clinical Laboratory analyses on body fluids, blood, and tissues using automated and non-automated methods.
  • Consult with physicians regarding the correlation of test results with disease states.
  • Perform quality control tests according to procedure and maintain appropriate data recording.
  • Assess quality control data and take appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits.
  • Recognize and identify unusual clinical laboratory results.
  • Instruct pathology residents in test procedures and methodologies.
  • Assist in the instruction of medical technology students assigned to the laboratory.
  • Assist in the research and development of new methods and procedures.
  • Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system or LIS (Laboratory Information System) may be required in certain areas.
  • Other related duties relevant to the specified lab sections.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in biological or related sciences.
  • 3 years (within the last 5 years) of hands-on bench work experience in the clinical or research laboratory. 
  • Adhere to the laboratory's policy and procedure. 
  • Attention to detail. 
  • Good documentation practice. 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of the team. 
  • Evidence of participation in quality and data management is required. 
  • Familiarity with computer programs in Microsoft Office is required, including Word and Excel. 
  • Must be eligible to work in the US (citizen or permanent resident).

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires infrequent standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, Day shift. This position entails some weekend and holiday work on a rotation basis with other colleagues.

Work Locations

The University of Michigan Health Center for Reproductive Medicine at Bloomfield Hills.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening
