Job Summary

The mission of the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) is to create and share knowledge to help people use information -- with technology -- to build a better world. Successful candidates for this position are committed, and directly contribute, to our goal of being the best research and teaching institution for the understanding and design of information and its technologies in service of people and society.

UMSI is home to vibrant research and teaching programs, with 50 FTE professors, and over 1200 students. We offer five degrees: a Ph.D.; a Master of Science in Information; a Master of Health Informatics; a Master in Applied Data Science (our newest and first online degree); and a Bachelor of Science in Information. These positions will report to the Senior Instructional Content Specialist and work closely with the Online Programs Team and UMSI faculty to help test and refine updated course content, worked examples, and assignments (in Jupyter notebooks or similar) for new or existing Master of Applied Data Science (MADS) courses.

Positions run in academic terms (Fall/Winter/Spring-Summer) and are renewable if needed/wanted. Generally, CDRAs work approximately 10-15 hours per week, but given the flexibility of this position may work more or less depending on their wants and our needs.
 

Course Description

Courses for testing and iteration fall into the following categories (1) Writing and Reflection (ex. ethics in data science), (2) Computational Methods (ex. introductory pandas, working with large datasets), (3) Analytic Techniques (ex. data mining methods, experimental design, machine learning techniques), (4) Visualization (ex. exploratory visualizations and presentation of results), and (5) Application of Data Science (ex. information retrieval, social media analytics, data science for social good).  

Depending on the skills you already have or would like to build, you may serve as a CDRA in one or more of our course categories. Beta testing, reviewing, and recommending changes for the majority of our courses requires a strong working knowledge of the Python programming language. Responsibilities*

  • Assisting in testing assignments, exams, tutorials, lectures, etc.
  • Generating critique and actionable feedback for updated course materials both at an item level and a course level.
  • Ensuring consistency of format and content of learning materials for individual courses in collaboration with other CDRAs.
  • Appraising course beta team of any deviations to the beta schedule.
  • Working closely with other UM stakeholders, including but not limited to faculty iterating on, teaching and/or coordinating the course(s).
  • Other duties as assigned.
     

Required Qualifications*

  • Strong knowledge of and use of Python
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Other qualifications as needed by the course(s) (access the Additional Course Details document for more information)
  • Ability to carefully document and explain critique(s) of course(s) content

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience using Jupyter notebooks
  • Experience evaluating learning objectives against course content and program curriculum 
  • Experience with using the Altair visualization library

Modes of Work
