Legal Secretary Intermediate
Student Legal Services, a full-service law office that assists students at the University of Michigan, is searching for a legal secretary to join our staff of 5 full-time attorneys, 1 paralegal, and at least 2 student interns. We advise, negotiate on behalf of, and provide legal representation to students in county, state, and federal courts. Also, we host educational presentations regarding the law and participate in multiple events throughout the Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses.
Some practice areas of our office are housing and landlord/tenant law, family law, probate, consumer law, criminal defense, immigration law (referrals only), and contract review. We also provide notary services to students, faculty, and staff.

Responsibilities*
You will:
- Answer the phone and route calls.
- Greet clients and other visitors to the office.
- Prepare basic legal documents and correspondence, and review documents for accuracy and completeness.
- Maintain attorney calendars and schedule appointments.
- Verify enrollment and eligibility for services and schedule intake appointments.
- Coordinate travel arrangements, prepare itineraries, and process expense reports for staff.
- Maintain client files.
- Provide administrative support.
- Maintain client account ledgers, track and prepare monthly reports of all client deposits and disbursements.
- Prepare and process financial transactions.
- Report to the director and assist the director with reviews of the annual budget.
- Work onsite at the office.
- Maintain and order supplies.
- File documents with courts.
- Prepare materials for mailing and take them to the post office.
- Help with preparation for presentations.
- Maintain the office law library.
- Treat client communications and data with confidentiality.
- Notarize documents.

Required Qualifications*
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years of progressive office administrative experience
- Working knowledge of Word, Adobe, Google, PowerPoint, Excel, and the Windows operating system
- Notary Public or eligibility to become one within 3 months of hire

Additional Information

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
Selected candidates whose start date is 4/1/2025 or after, will not be eligible for the university FY25-26 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.
Relocation will not be offered for this position.
