Job Summary

Assist the unit nursing leadership team in planning and managing the clinical and administrative operations of the Pediatric Cardiac ICU Nursing Services, including supervision of the nursing, technical and clerical personnel.

Assist in managing budgets, payroll, commodities, staffing/scheduling, hiring and performance evaluations. Clinical nursing supervisor will participate in new program development and implementation; plan, organize and evaluate patient care standards guidelines and educational activities; and monitor and implement continuous quality improvement programs.

Responsibilities*

To assist the Clinical Nursing Director in planning and management of the unit and the provision of patient care. To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education, and research. Assists in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements. This position will have a collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel. The Nursing Supervisor position reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director. Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.

Responsibilities include:
Personnel Management:

  • Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
  • Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
  • Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
  • Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
  • Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.

Clinical Practice:

  • Evening and night shift work will be required to provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching, support, and evaluation of staff on all shifts.

Management of Clinical Area:
 

  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
  • Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
  • Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
  • Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
  • Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
  • Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Nurse Manager. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. 
  • Collaborate with Educational Coordinator to implement competency-based evaluation.
  • Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Quality Assurance and Research:

  • Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
  • Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
  • Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.
  • Assure and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

Required Qualifications*

Required Educational Requirements:

Applicant must meet one of the following: 
* Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR 
* Associate?s degree or diploma in Nursing and a Master?s degree in Nursing. 

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. 
  • Minimum five (5) years experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum two (2) years (within the last 5 years) RN experience an ICU and or pediatric ICU/Pediatric Cardiac ICU.
  • Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC).  The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), for the list, visit here
  • Evidence of demonstrated leadership ability including charge nurse, team leader, professional development framework, unit level or institutional level active committee membership, project lead, Superuser, or other management/ supervisory experience.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in nursing.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.
  • Five (5) years of PCTU experience.
  • Consultative and teaching skills

Note: The clinical nurse supervisor will deliver bedside nursing care for a portion of time.
