Job Summary

The overarching role of our team is to support patients and families through the surgical day and to execute clerical tasks enabling medical providers to focus on patient care. Staff on our team cover each of the clerical desks in the Pavilion, UH and CVC Operating Rooms and Post Anesthesia Care Units (PACUs). The Operating Room and Anesthesia Front Desks, Pre-Op, and PACU clerical roles are largely `behind the scenes positions, assisting and coordinating the people, equipment, schedules, etc. that enable smooth operations in and around the operating rooms. Surgery Reception staff check patients in for their procedures and act as communication liaisons between clinicians and family members, relaying important information throughout the stressful surgical day.

Responsibilities*

  • Use MiChart and other tracking systems to make sure that patients are flowing through the system accurately (have been checked in/transferred appropriately etc.) 
  • Act as a resource to those in the perioperative environment
  • Keep team members (clerical, nursing, etc.) aware of changes to patient status/plans 
  • Facilitate prescription process 
  • Print schedules, forms, logs, patient lists, labels, wristbands, etc.
  • Coordinate updates and print supply requisitions
  • Professionally and politely field/route all preop phone calls and guests
  • Assist staff and guests with questions and provide clerical support 
  • Adhere to high standards of teamwork by demonstrating adaptability, flexibility and consistently sharing information and resources with others  
  • Train new team members and maintain accurate up-to-date training documentation and checklists 
  • Consistently remain at the preop desk and provide thorough hand off data at the end of shift 
  • Other duties and projects as assigned
     

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or General Education Development (GED) credential
  • 1 -2 years of experience or a combination of education and experience
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills
  • Good investigative skills and strong attention to detail 
  • Excellent customer service experience (preferably in a medical environment)
  • Demonstrate effective problem-solving skills
  • Self-directed, motivated and able to multitask
  • Prioritizes work and manages time
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with members of the healthcare team
  • Work well with minimal supervision
  • Excellent attendance record and reliability
     

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of Perioperative and surgical environments
  • Experience with Epic/MiChart and Microsoft Teams
  • Familiar with UMHS policies and procedures
  • Basic medical terminology
  • Previous work/volunteer experience in a medical environment
     

Work Schedule

The selected candidate will work 4:30am-1:00pm, M-F.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
