The Center for Emerging Democracies (CED) promotes scholarship to better understand the conditions and policies that foster the transition from autocratic rule to democratic governance, past and present.
The II is seeking a team member responsible for coordinating programming and administration of CED with the goal of promoting the mission of, and providing high quality outcomes for, the Center. The Academic Program Specialist liaises with U-M departments and partner institutions, and collaborates with staff, faculty, and student networks within the II. The CED Academic Program Specialist will partner with the CED Faculty Director and report to the Unit Manager to coordinate the activities related to the Center's projects and activities.

Responsibilities*
The Academic Program Specialist serves as the lead CED staff representative on campus, working closely with other support staff and the faculty director on short- and long-term programming, communications, and reporting. Collaborates with II, U-M units, and other partners to deliver programming and promote the CED's initiatives and academic programs. Serves as a CED administrative contact to other II Centers, LSA departments, and other U-M units.
Program Coordination & Event Planning (50%)
- Plan CED sponsored lectures/panels, offering center programming on campus and over Zoom in hybrid format. Secure event spaces by following reservation protocols.
- Send invitations to potential speakers on the director's behalf and maintain a productive and timely communication flow with them.
- Promote events and share lecture info with II communications team in a timely fashion to advertise lectures effectively on website calendar, email campaigns, print materials, and social media.
- Promote CED research publications: publish on CED website, circulate via email and social media, and track views
- Coordinate all logistics related to guest speaker's visit to U-M: gather personal details over email and purchase airfare, reserve hotel room, arrange airport transfer, create personalized itinerary, make meal reservations, collect receipts and arrange reimbursement.
- Coordinate with other units to implement cross-disciplinary and cross-regional content and to reach larger audiences.
- Arrange for audio/visual needs including recording, distributing, and archiving media.
- Develop operational budget for programming and events
- Communicate program/event budget with CED Director and Unit Manager
CED Administrative Support (30%)
- Organize CED Steering Committee meetings and prepare meeting materials.
- Assist director in creating a stronger CED community by further developing the associate program of relevant faculty, visiting scholars, and students.
- Maintain CED email groups to ensure that promotional materials are reaching the largest target audience possible.
- Work together with the director to identify and add new faculty and community members to CED mailing lists.
- Write reports and provide content for press releases.
- Review the CED website regularly and send updates to the II communications team.
- Develop CED social media presence.
- Research opportunities on applying to foundations and grants.
- Work collaboratively with the Unit Manager and center Director on development and fundraising activities.
- Exploring avenues for funding and liaising with LSA advancement.
Financial Oversight and Reporting (10%)
- Track all expenses and provide budget updates to the unit manager and center director.
- Submit reimbursement and honorarium requests, tracking payments.
- Retain expense receipts and reconcile P-card expenses in a timely fashion.
- Ensure that university financial policies and procedures are followed.
- Track annual budget and expenditures.
- Prepare annual reports.
Organize CED Research Opportunities (10%)
- Facilitate CED graduate workshops, scheduling regularly recurring meetings with the director, postdoctoral fellows, and affiliates.
- Maintain current email listservs for graduate and research fellows.
- Provide ongoing administrative support and U-M resources to two post-doctoral fellows throughout their appointments.
- Support and develop graduate and research fellow communities.
- Work with CED Director to develop additional research opportunities
- Work with CED Director to develop internship/fellowship programs for graduate students
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's degree in a relevant international or area studies field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Familiarity with academic program administration and social media. Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills, excellent communication and English language skills. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends. Ability to handle a variety of tasks and meet deadlines. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace required.
Desired Qualifications*
Familiarity with University of Michigan policies and administrative procedures. Master's degree in a relevant international, area studies, or social science field or equivalent combination of education and professional experience. Fluency in a foreign language. Previous experience in program and event planning. Experience in development and fundraising activities. Experience working with foundations and grants.
Work Schedule
40 hours per week Monday through Friday with occasional night/weekend hours.
Work Locations
The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts has a flexible and hybrid work policy. Work may be performed on campus and remotely as approved by the supervisor.

Additional Information
The salary range for this position is $45,400 to $56,750. Please note a higher salary may be offered to well qualified candidates.

The administrative supervisor for this position is the Unit Manager. The CED director determines the overall goals and strategies for the center, relying on the program coordinator to help implement this vision.
