Library Info Desk Student Assistant Job Summary

The University of Michigan - Dearborn Mardigian Library is currently accepting applications for Library Info Desk Student Assistants. We're looking for students who are passionate about providing the best possible experience for Mardigian Library users, are excited to build professional skills, have excellent customer service skills, and can work collaboratively with other students and staff. 
 

Responsibilities*

Primary responsibilities of Student Assistants include:

  • Being the front face of the library and modeling excellent customer service practices
  • Cultivating a welcoming, inclusive environment for UM-Dearborn students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests
  • Assisting patrons with finding and accessing library resources (books/eBooks, databases, journals, course reserves, etc.) through in-person and telephone interactions
  • Answering basic reference questions and making proper referrals to library staff
  • Having knowledge of Mardigian Library resources and services, as well as knowledge of other resource sharing systems (Get This, MeLCat, Interlibrary Loan)
  • Checking in/checking out library materials
  • Shelving, locating, organizing, and maintaining library materials 
  • Processing books, ebooks, journals, and other materials in the library collection
  • Explaining and enforcing library policies and procedures
  • Providing information about library and campus operations
  • Working on special projects, as needed

Desired Qualifications*

Work study award for the current or upcoming academic semester preferred but not required.


 

Work Schedule

This is an onsite position with the following scheduling requirements: 
 

  • Access Services student assistants may work shifts between the hours of 8:45 am-10:00 pm. 
  • You will be required to be available to work early morning, late night, and weekends.
  • You will need to have transportation for all possible hours. 
  • We are currently hiring for positions that work primarily during the morning, early afternoon and Sundays. For example, between 11:00am-4:00 pm. 
  • You will be required to work at least one shift when the library holds extended hours for final exams. Student assistants work shifts between the hours of 8:45 am-12:00 am (midnight) during this time.
  • There is a mandatory orientation day each year for all student assistants. 

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
