The Endoscopy Technician supports physicians and nurses as part of the Medical Procedures Unit team, contributing to high-quality care for patients undergoing endoscopic and other diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. This role includes both direct and indirect patient care tasks, equipment handling, and administrative duties. Technicians work under the supervision of registered nurses and physicians

Responsibilities*

Clinical Support

  • Assist with patient intake, preparation, and transport (ambulatory, wheelchair, stretcher).
  • Assist with patient mobility and transfer including use of assistive devices.
  • May take and record vital signs, weights, point of care testing and document in the EMR.
  • Prepare procedure rooms, prepare stretchers, and clean rooms/bays pre & post procedure.
  • Position patients appropriately pre- and intra-procedure.
  • Assist with abdominal pressure as directed by the physician.
  • Assist with airway support as directed.
  • Collect and manage specimens with attention to detail.
  • May support procedures performed outside of the Medical Procedure Unit (UH MPU) 

Technical Duties

  • Select and quality-check appropriate procedural equipment and accessories.
  • Set up, troubleshoot, and assist with procedural equipment and accessories.
  • Perform pre-cleaning and transport of endoscopes and instruments.
  • Manage and troubleshoot equipment required for procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory standards as related to equipment and supply 
    management e.g. scope cabinets, scope hanging, procedural equipment cabinets, and storage.
  • Maintain lead aprons and adhere to dosimetry compliance in accordance with 
    organizational policies.

Administrative & Team Support

  • Communicate patient care concerns with the inter-disciplinary team
  • Maintain inventory and stock supplies.
  • Participate in unit-based committees.
  • Training and mentoring of new staff.
  • May participate in monthly regulatory compliance reviews/report identified concerns
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program or equivalent combination of education and experience.?Recent experience in an outpatient setting.Graduation from a Medical Assistant program or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Recent experience in an outpatient setting

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience in a medical procedure or endoscopy setting.
  • Familiarity with Epic or similar EMR systems.
  • Certified or Registered Medical Assistant.
  • SGNA - Advanced GI Technical Certification or ASG

Work Schedule

  • Monday-Friday, variable start times.
  • Rotating Saturdays and evenings (UH MPU).
  • On-call responsibilities for weekend procedures (UH MPU)

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
