What You'll Do

The temporary Manager of Event Strategy will be responsible for envisioning event programming that supports the goals of each event sponsor and communicating that vision to colleagues. The manager will coordinate, prepare and organize speaker preparations alongside the Office of University and Development Events (UDE) team, throughout the planning of institution-wide ceremonial, presidential and development events.  The position will create speaker slates, working with UM leadership, faculty and staff, to create impactful programs that support event specific goals. The position will receive direction from the Associate Director, Event Strategy, and will partner with colleagues to produce superior, impactful events.   
 

Responsibilities*

85% Event Strategy:

  • Craft program concepts that support event goals set by event sponsors (in-person and virtual), and be a lead resource for colleagues to advise on event goals, visions and programming.
  • Detailed program tasks may include: creating a program that meets sponsor goals, inviting speakers to participate in events (development, ceremonial, or presidential), creating timed event agendas, working with speech writers, providing content for marketing materials, managing speaker preparation process, assisting with the coordination of talking points for participating leaders and volunteers, leading event rehearsals with speakers (in-person or virtually).
  • Responsible for event day contact for speakers and performers, including high-profile, leadership-level speakers.
  • Utilize giving and interest reports to identify appropriate potential event programming and use that knowledge to support cases for particular programming selections.
  • Review and track post-event programming analytics to identify trends and help to build future programs.
  • Collaborate in updating a database to track past programs, and speakers for future needs.

10% Consultation, Education, and Special Initiatives:

  • Monitor event industry standards and trends.
  • Build knowledge of and keep abreast of OUD and U-M fundraising priorities
  • Build knowledge of and keep abreast of UDE best practices. 
  • Keep current on University news, initiatives, policies, and procedures.

Note:

  • Overtime is required for this position and may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Travel to staff events will be required and may include weekends and holidays.

Required Qualifications*

  • Significant event industry experience, including program/speaker management.
  • At least 1 year experience providing customer service.
  • Collaborative and team approach to work.
  • Strong time management, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Superior proofreading ability and written and oral communications skills.

Desired Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree or a minimum of 2 years of applicable experience.
  • Demonstrated event program management or speaker preparation/coordination experience is desired.
  • Familiarity with teamwork.com, formstack.com, and Google workspace.
