Job Summary

A technician position is available in the Ledvina Lab of molecular microbiology at the University of Michigan. The lab combines bacterial genetics, protein biochemistry, high-throughput assays and bioinformatics to studying the mechanistic innerworkings on the bacterial immune system. The Ledvina Lab is a new lab which recently opened in the fall of 2025 in the department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology (MCDB). The department is home to many interdisciplinary labs and provides a rich environment for career development within the biomedical sciences that will further be complemented by training and mentoring within the Ledvina Lab. The lab seeks to hire a self-motivated research technician who will assist in launching the lab. The desired candidate will work under the guidance of the Principal Investigator to manage ordering and lab organization, perform routine experiments, train new personnel, and will additionally have the opportunity to work on collaborative research projects within the lab.

Responsibilities*

We seek a highly motivated individual that will successfully contribute to the following responsibilities in a team-oriented environment: 

Lab management and organization (30% effort)

  • Place orders for the lab, correspond with vendors, maintain inventories, coordinate lab safety protocols, maintain equipment, autoclave and wash dishware 

Research (60% effort) 

Work in collaboration with other lab members and the Principal Investigator to perform and collect data using the following routine techniques:

  • Molecular biology techniques (ie plasmid cloning, PCR, western blots, etc.)
  • Bacterial genetics
  • Diverse microbial assays which involve properly handling BSL2 level organisms
  • Protein purification
  • Protein and nuclei acid biochemistry 

Training (10% effort)

  • Train new members, including postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates, in the techniques noted above and provide general lab orientation

Required Qualifications*

  • Highschool Diploma and 1 year of experience
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with common molecular biology techniques such as PCR and gel electrophoresis

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related field
  • Expertise in handling BSL2 level bacterial species
  • Previous experience with bacterial genetics and bacterial growth assays
  • Experience working in molecular and cell biology research environments
  • Ability to problem-solve and work independently
  • Flexibility to take on new tasks as the lab grows

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, 12-month term-limited position with a possibility of renewal based on the availability of funding, the availability of work, and overall successful performance.
