Job Summary

The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management. We offer an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community and exceed expectations. This position is crucial in ensuring the safety and security of the University of Michigan's facilities. Your primary location will be at the Ruthven Administration building , but you may be deployed for similar assignments throughout the University of Michigan campus. You will be responsible for monitoring entry into the building, including safeguarding the employees, visitors, and guests.

Responsibilities*

  • Monitoring entry into the building, including safeguarding the employees, visitors, and guests. 
  • Conduct thorough security screening of individuals
  • Assist visitors by providing answers to inquiries and offering clear directions within the facility while prioritizing security measures
  • Maintain a meticulous daily activity log documenting incidents and promptly prepare detailed incident reports
  • Immediately respond to threats
  • Prevent unauthorized access to assigned facilities
  • Undertake other duties as assigned related to visitor management

Required Qualifications*

  • High school or GED equivalent
  • Five years of armed governmental service or armed security experience, the ability to pass an MCOLES PA 330 (3-week academy), and 80 hours of comprehensive firearms training to
    include MILO (scenario-based training)
  • Prior experience with conflict resolution, de-escalation, and active engagement with the public
  • Demonstrated commitment to public safety, excellent communication, and organizational skills
  • Prior experience making decisions and acting quickly in stressful situations
  • Ability to exercise independent, sound judgment and remain calm in emergencies
  • Proficient in public and interpersonal relations
  • Willingness to undergo training on relevant software and techniques, quarterly firearms training, Advance Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT), or comparable active attacker training after hire

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

These positions work onsite primarily at the Ruthven Administration building.

Additional Information

All members of the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union which contains and settles all matters concerning wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
