Job Summary

A Research Laboratory Technician Senior/Inter position is available in the Edwards Lab at the University of Michigan, a new lab opening in early 2026 in the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology (CDB). We use an innovative combination of developmental biology models including Xenopus (frog), mouse, and pluripotent stem cells, gene editing, and microscopy techniques to investigate the disease genetics and developmental biology of the trachea ("windpipe) and esophagus ("food pipe"). 

Our group values teamwork, community, and intellectual growth. We are seeking a self-motivated laboratory technician who will assist in launching the lab and collaborating on ongoing research projects. Working under the guidance of Dr. Nicole Edwards, the Principal Investigator, the desired candidate will gain competence in routine techniques, work on research projects, and train new personnel.

What You'll Do

Scientific Research 

Work in collaboration with the Principal Investigator to perform and collect data using these techniques:

  • Xenopus CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing experiments
  • Tissue processing for immunofluorescence
  • Confocal and light microscopy
  • Work in collaboration with other lab members to support ongoing laboratory experiments including:
    • Mouse embryology experiments

Training 

  • Onboarding and training of lab members, including research staff, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students

Lab Management for mouse colony 

  • Supporting lab members in management of the lab's mouse colony and protocol management

Required Qualifications*

Research Laboratory Technician Senior: A Bachelor's Degree and 1-2 years of experience in a related discipline is required. 

Research Laboratory Technician Intermediate: A High School Diploma or Associate's degree and 1-3 years experience in a related discipline is required. A Bachelor's Degree is preferred. 


Requirements for both levels: 

  • Experience with basic molecular biology techniques
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills contributing to a strong team environment
  • Desire to learn and implement new laboratory techniques
  • Ability to work independently and problem solve

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience with microscopy techniques and data analysis
  • Experience working in developmental biology research (not required)

Background Screening
