Job Summary
The Property Disposition department at the University of Michigan is responsible for managing the sale and proper disposal of surplus equipment and furniture from the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses- including the U-M Health System. We are seeking an organized, customer-focused, and innovative Manager to oversee warehouse operations, lead a dedicated team, and ensure effective redistribution, sale, and environmentally responsible disposal of surplus university assets.
Responsibilities*
- Direct all daily warehouse operations, including receiving, inventory, storage, display, and sale of surplus property from academic, administrative, and medical units.
- Supervise and train warehouse staff to ensure efficient, safe, and customer-oriented service.
- Develop and implement strategies to maximize sales through storefront, auctions, online platforms, and special sale events.
- Enforce university policies and state/federal regulations regarding surplus asset disposition, including environmental and safety compliance.
- Collaborate with university departments to coordinate property pickup, donation, or transfer, ensuring timely and accurate documentation.
- Maintain accurate inventory, sales, and financial records through the use of property management software.
- Analyze sales trends and operational data to develop process improvements.
- Oversee marketing and communication efforts to university departments and the general public regarding surplus sales and new inventory.
- Coordinate with Environmental Health & Safety for appropriate disposal of specialized items (e.g., hazardous materials, medical equipment).
- Prepare regular reports for University leadership on financial performance, inventory turnover, and operational milestones.
- Foster a positive work environment that values diversity, sustainability, and excellent service.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 3 years of supervisory experience in warehouse management, retail sales, surplus property, or a related field.
- Strong leadership abilities; experience in coaching, mentorship, and team building.
- Familiarity with e-commerce and auction platforms preferred.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
- Ability to analyze data, manage budgets, and create meaningful reports.
- Commitment to sustainability, compliance, and operational efficiency.
- IT proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with property or inventory management systems is a plus.
Desired Qualifications*
- Knowledge of U-M policies and procedures
- Knowledge of MPathways
- Knowledge of inventory software
- Knowledge of surplus asset management, inventory control, and/or resale of used equipment is highly desirable.
- Two (2) years of recent experience in supply chain management and inventory management
- Two (2) years of experience with automated inventory management processes and techniques
