Responsibilities*

  • Clinical Social workers in this program have clinical responsibility to conduct new patient evaluations including suicide risk assessment for Adult and Children in an acute care setting. This includes assessment, DSM-5 diagnoses, treatment planning, crisis intervention and discharge planning. 
  • Provide brief individual and family crisis psychotherapy, patient education using best practice models which are applicable to Psychiatric Emergency Service practice settings. 
  • Provide crisis care management services for Adult and Children, including telephone crisis intervention and brief stabilizing care. Patient management and treatment include coordination of care both internal and external to UMHS, and assisting patients with appropriate levels of care. 
  • Assist with patient, family and visitor concerns and care management as needed. 
  • Coordinate admissions, outpatient care, verify insurance as appropriate. 
  • Complete petitions and coordinate, with PES treatment team, law enforcement, probate court and other key entries. 
  • Provide shift lead coordination in collaboration the PES treatment team and physicians. 
  • Participate in unit orientation and training including clinical coaching as necessary for new team members in collaboration with the program leadership.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master's degree in social work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education is necessary.
  • Must have current license (LLMSW or LMSW) to practice clinical social work in the State of Michigan or the ability to be fully licensed.
  • Clinical practice concentration and field practicum and 1 to 3 years of direct work experience in a Psychiatric Emergency Services hospital based program or similar work is desirable.
  • Additional Social Work experience in professional social work is desirable.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Desired qualifications for this position include knowledge and direct experience in a Psychiatric Emergency Services hospital based program with acute psychiatric patients and mental health/substance abuse services.
  • Applicants should have supervised experience in assessment and best practice models of care, crisis intervention psychotherapy, and proficiency in use of DSM- 5, treatment planning, management of psychiatric crises, telephonic crisis intervention, and experience in care management.
  • Experience and training with managing patients and visitors who have behavioral dyscontrol and the ability to de-escalate escalating behavior per UMHS/PES practices. Knowledge of the Michigan Mental Health Code.
  • Applicants must have the skills in electronic charting, data entry using multiple data bases, and phone systems.
  • Applicants must have the ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a timely manner while collaborating with the Psychiatric Emergency Services treatment team and other providers.
  • The social worker will participate in the education and training of students, and staff from social work and other disciplines.
  • Clinical practice concentration and field practicum and 1 to 3 years of direct work experience in a Psychiatric Emergency Services hospital based program or similar work is desirable.
  • Additional Social Work experience in professional social work is desirable.

Work Schedule

This is a .6FTE (24hrs) weekend position. Saturday and Sunday 8:00am to 8:30pm 

Work Locations

This position will work out of the Psychiatric Emergency Services unit within the Ann Arbor hospital campus.

Underfill Statement

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.  Advancement through the career ladder at the Expert or Clinical Scholar Level is required for placement in the MSW Senior Classification

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
