Responsibilities*

  • Repair surface before painting, filling holes and cracks with putty or patching plaster.
  • Select, mix and blend paint to meet color, consistency, surface composition and durability criteria.
  • Roll, brush and spray paint onto interior and exterior surfaces, including walls, trim, machinery, furniture, cabinets, smokestacks and structural steel.
  • Finish new furniture or refinish old furniture, including desks, chairs, cabinets and their components, alternately spray applications of stain, varnish, lacquer or shellac with a sanding or buffing operation.
  • Remove and hang wallpaper.
  • Prepare surfaces for painting by washing, scraping, brushing, sanding and sealing.
  • Cover & protect contents and adjacent spaces, through use of drop cloths, tarps, and plastic.
  • Clean rollers, brushes and other equipment.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders.
  • Lead and direct teams, inspecting and directing work.
  • Prepare records and service reports documenting materials utilized, time expended, daily reports, and jobsite status.
  • Order paint, stain materials, and supplies required for the completion of projects.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • 5 years of commercial painting experience in the painting of interior and exterior surfaces of building and structures
  • 5 years of professional commercial knowledge of the equipment, methods and materials used in brush, spray and roller painting
  • 5 years of experience with staining and finishing of new wood surfaces and the refinishing of existing wood surfaces
  • 5 years of professional customer service
  • Ability to mix, match harmonize and contract colors; both paint and stain
  • Ability to work from ladders and scaffolding
  • Reasonable manual strength and dexterity
  • Ability to tape and finish drywall installations, repairs/replacement
  • Ability to maintain tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of Google products, Smart Phone technology, tablet technology, computers, and construction management software.
  • Ability to conduct online research
  • Ability to read, write and interpret sketches, diagrams, and construction documents.
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to wear a respirator or fresh air hood
  • Ability and willingness to work in animal and morgue areas. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • 5 years of experience with installation of wall-covering such as vinyl, fabrics, etc.
  • 5 years of commercial estimating experience; time and materials for painting projects
  • Experience with special coatings such as Zolotone, Polymix, one part and two part epoxy
  • Experience and certification in the operation of aerial lifts (scissor lift, JLG's etc.)
  • 5 years of experience working in hospital and health care facilities
  • 5 years of experience working in laboratory facilities
  • Knowledge of interim life safety methods
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Ability to use and maintain conventional, HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) and air assisted spray equipment
  • Willingness to work overtime if required
  • Entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Experience working with an automated work order system.

Work Schedule

Hours are 7 AM to 3:15 PM, Monday-Friday

Additional Information

This position reports through the AEC-Construction department.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the U-M Skilled Trades Union, Inc., which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
