Job Summary

The Transportation Senior Supervisor will participate as an effective member of the University of Michigan Transportation Services Department administrative and management team. This position provides direct support to the Transportation Manager and is responsible for providing oversight and direction to daily transit operations, supporting department-wide initiatives, and delivering management support across all areas of workforce, community engagement, and administrative functions. The Senior Supervisor supervises Intermediate and Associate Supervisors, and provides leadership in implementing operational, customer service, and departmental goals and policies.

Responsibilities*

Provide oversight responsibility for all operational issues, maintaining service quality and departmental standards.

  • Assist the Transportation Manager in developing, planning, and implementing operational protocols, responding to service enhancements, delays, service interruptions, staffing needs, and organizational changes.
  • Lead and direct operations staff, including Intermediate and Associate Supervisors and Transit Coach Operators, ensuring consistent delivery of fixed route, charter, contracted and paratransit services.
  • Support coordination and execution of special services and paratransit services.
  • Ensure compliance with State of Michigan licensing regulations, federal, state, and University policies.
  • Maintain successful community and customer relations; ensure timely resolution of customer concerns and complaints.
  • Gather relevant information and make decisions regarding daily operations in accordance with established policies, procedures, contracts, and operational needs.
  • Participate in recruitment, hiring, promotion, and termination processes for transit personnel; provide evaluation, counseling, and discipline as needed.
  • Ensure accurate completion of payroll, HR, and other required administrative functions.
  • Participate in development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist in budget monitoring, route planning, scheduling, and use of department technologies and systems.
  • Train and support employees in operational, safety, and customer service practices as necessary, including retraining programs for staff development.
  • Provide backup management and supervision for all transit operations, as required.
  • Represent the management team in grievance proceedings and labor-related issues.
  • Support organizational initiatives by collecting, analyzing, and reporting operational statistics and compliance documentation.
  • Maintain records as required by law; prepare reports for state and federal reporting needs.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, department heads, public officials, and constituents regarding transportation needs and solutions.
  • All other duties as assigned or required by the Transportation Manager.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent amount of education/experience required; education in business, public administration, or related fields preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in transit operations and supervision, including experience leading operational teams.
  • Experience in a front-line or higher supervisory role preferably within a transit or transportation environment.
  • Valid driver license and driving record that meets UofM PTS requirements, with CDL Group B and Passenger endorsement required (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and Access, and Google Apps.
  • Proven ability to provide leadership, communicate effectively, and work as part of a team in a dynamic setting.
  • Experience in resolving customer concerns, documenting procedures, completing administrative functions, and complying with policies and regulations.
  • Ability to multitask, organize, meet deadlines, and work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Knowledge of labor agreements and experience participating in labor relations procedures.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Three or more years in transit operations or transportation-related supervisory roles.
  • Supervisory experience, including conflict resolution, team leadership, and staff development.
  • Experience in accident/incident response, driver training, and operational improvement initiatives.
  • Experience supporting departmental budget goals and cost control.
  • Experience in transit planning and scheduling, and use of technology for operational enhancements.
  • Experience working within a labor agreement environment and documenting policies/procedures for reference.

Licensure & Certification

You must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License, Group B with Passenger endorsement, without any air brake restriction, from the State of Michigan.
