Job Summary

To carry out data collection processes for the Survey Services Lab using Survey Research Center standardized interviewing techniques and protocols. To complete all associated study and administrative materials to specified expectations, including converting refusal interviews and conducting pretests.

Responsibilities*

  • Persuade study respondents from diverse backgrounds to participate in social science surveys.
  • Accurately complete Computer-Assisted Interviewing (CAI) instruments, where responses to questions are recorded verbatim into a computer using standardized techniques.
  • Utilize effective respondent contact and sample management procedures for assigned individual case loads.
  • Conduct and complete refusal conversion interviews.
  • Assist with pre-testing and testing of survey instruments including paper and pencil questionnaires and computer assisted interviewing questionnaires.
  • Code data entry applications.
  • Perform operations following questionnaire completion including editing, interpretive data coding, and evaluation of survey responses.
  • Perform at acceptable levels as measured by response rate, productivity, attendance, recording accuracy, and use of general interviewing techniques.
  • Assist with the implementation of additional data collection services such as administration of mailings, specialized respondent tracking, data entry, and recruitment of focus group participants.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as procedures manuals and work instructions.
  • Ability to present research study goals and objectives in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Ability to maintain the security and confidentially of all data.
  • Display good teamwork skills and willingness to continually improve performance.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Graduate from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Familiarity with desktop or laptop computer.
  • Quality of voice that will enable respondents to hear the questions read in a uniform way.
  • Receptive to monitoring and constructive feedback to improve quality of interviews and interviewing techniques.
  • Successful completion of general interviewing training session on standard SRC interviewing techniques.
  • Successful completion of certification interviews at the end of SRC training.
  • Ability to work at least 16 hours per week on average. Some projects may require more than 20 hours per week, but most interviewers work approximately 20 hours per week.
  • Flexible schedule that will allow attendance at training and a work schedule that includes work during the evenings and on weekends. Some daytime work may be required as well.
  • Willingness to complete other interviewing tasks assigned.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Additional Information

No functional supervision is exercised.

In addition to the starting pay rate, certified bilingual interviewers receive a $5.00 per hour pay differential
