Medical Assistant Associate - Chelsea Surgical Services
This position supports the new Chelsea Surgical Services ACU located at the St. Joseph Mercy Professional Office Building, in Chelsea. This position will support 2 fulltime General Surgeons, a Urology Surgeon and a pre-op service line. The primary function of this position would be Medical Assistant and clerical duties. The position will provide direct patient care, assist with clinical procedures and coordinate patient flow for the 2 homebased General Surgeons and 1 Urology Surgeon operating at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea. This position would also support patient appointment scheduling, check in-check out and In-Basket management across all services.

Responsibilities*
- Provide clinic operational support to a complex multiple physicians' practice in an adult ambulatory care setting for surgical patients. This position will Receive cross-training in all areas of the clinic and is located in the Chelsea POB.
- Patient intake and rooming duties in the clinic. Document health information in the Electronic Medical record. Maintain proficiency and competency in performing tasks such as vital signs, dressing changes, and immunizations. Coordinate patient flow, as assigned, throughout the clinic. Perform various clinically-related duties delegated by the medical staff. Provide routine instructions to patients regarding procedures, treatments, and follow-up care instructions as delegated by the clinical medical staff. Assist with complex procedures in the procedure room, assist with dressing changes administer patient injections and point of urine testing as directed
- Complete FMLA, Disability and RTW forms. Maintain equipment; orders and stocks supplies and maintains an orderly clinic environment. Pre-clean and transport scopes for HLD and assist in performance improvement projects in order to improve the safety, efficiency and quality in the Chelsea Surgical Service clinic
- Schedule new and return patient visits determining appropriate clinic provider based on specified standards.
- Schedule clinic visits, diagnostic services and ambulatory procedures for patients.
- Verify insurance and guarantor information; if a change is warranted stop the check-in process and route patient to Registration.
- Verify and update patient demographic, primary care, and referring provider information real time, as part of the check-in process.
- Contact and reschedule patients' appointments due to provider unavailability.
- Inform patients of necessary preparations prior to visit or test in accordance with established guidelines.
- Obtain managed care referral and/or authorization.
- Prepare and distribute daily appointment schedule.
- Utilize patient consult data base to enter referrals for testing or clinic appointments to other areas, when referral is unable to be scheduled at the point of check out.
- Ensure completeness of financial documents including type of visit, reason for service, charge for service, diagnostic codes, and cost center.
- Collect cash and credit card payments from patients using established guidelines to determine patient pay portion and provide receipt of payment.
- Recognize when it is appropriate to refer patients to Patient Financial Counseling to set up payment plans or to follow up on questions regarding billing statements.
- Reconcile clinic cash collections daily according to specified clinic standards.
- Image designated documents into the MiChart system such as procedure consents.
- Verify that entry process of imaging was successful.
- Participate fully in the Lean in Daily Work (LIDW) model of continuous quality improvement. Active participation in LIDW includes identification of problems and submission of ideas for improvement to address problems, participation in daily huddles, and the use of structured problem solving, in a team setting, to address more complex problems.

Required Qualifications*
- High school diploma or GED.
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
- Moderate standing/walking, as well as, lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring patients.
- 1-3 years of experience
Assistant Level:
- 0-1 years of experience
- Some office experience
Desired Qualifications*
- Knowledge of PCs and desktop software with accurate typing speed of 40 wpm.
- Basic experience with e-mail systems.
- Demonstrated friendly and warm face to face manner with a clear, well-modulated speaking voice, ability to provide direct eye contact, and demonstrate kindness and respect to our patient population, faculty, and staff necessary.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary.
- Ability to manage stress effectively
- Some clerical experience, preferably in a medical setting
