Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Benefits System Support, the Benefits Administrator Lead will serve as a lead resource for complex benefits administration and customer service. You will work directly with members and benefit plan vendors to address questions related to eligibility, coverage, and claims, and will lead the resolution of escalated service and compliance issues.
You will provide guidance on benefit programs, policies, and procedures across the University, contribute to employee benefits communications and educational materials, and support the training and onboarding of new staff.
Responsibilities*
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert and liaison for Medicare enrollment, eligibility, and compliance, interpreting federal regulations and University policy and coordinating enrollment transitions, including Medicare Advantage plans.
- Oversee Medicare Part B reimbursement administration, including audits, eligibility validation, reconciliation of enrollment data, and authorization of payment corrections to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Monitor and audit enrollment and eligibility data across commercial and Medicare plans; identify trends or discrepancies and collaborate with vendors and internal partners to resolve issues.
- Manage compliance-related audits, subpoenas, and regulatory inquiries by researching benefit records, determining coverage and payer status, and providing documentation in collaboration with legal and compliance partners.
- Administer Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) compliance activities to ensure correct coordination of benefits and proper billing between Medicare and University medical plan vendors.
- Respond to CMS, vendor, and member inquiries involving complex benefit eligibility, enrollment history, billing, and claims issues.
- Partner with benefit plan vendors to ensure accurate enrollment, billing, and service delivery, proactively identifying and addressing recurring issues.
- Provide guidance and support to members and Benefit Office leadership on complex benefit administration, customer service, and compliance matters.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
- Minimum (5) years experience in employee benefits administration, benefits operations, or benefits-related customer service.
- Knowledge of organizational medical plan policies and procedures and related state and federal regulations.
- Ability to resolve complex problems quickly and efficiently.
- Proficient in computer applications such as Google Suite, Microsoft, Power Point, and Excel.
- Proficient utilizing an ERP system (ex. PeopleSoft) for confirming benefit eligibility and enrollment and ticketing system (ex. TDX) to manage member inquiries.
Work Locations
The mode of work for this position is Mobile/Remote. This role may require periodic meetings and training in the Ann Arbor office. Work arrangements are reviewed annually and may be subject to change based on performance and business needs.
