Job Summary
The University of Michigan Biological Station is hiring a year-round on-site Campus Manager/Assistant Director for the research field station's Pellston, Michigan campus to be a part of the leadership team helping to shape the UMBS strategic plans for year-round programming and campus. This person will manage day-to-day operations and provide leadership in safety, plant and research facilities, property stewardship, and residential life. The Campus Manager will report to the Director and Associate Director and provide year-round support and in-person leadership for the Pellston-based team. This is an Assistant Director 5-year term-limited position with the possibility of an extension.
Responsibilities*
Operations Leadership (30%)
- Manage day-to-day operations year-round at the Pellston campus.
- In collaboration with the Director and Associate Director, develop, implement, and evaluate campus policies and procedures for safety and facilities.
- Manage residential life, including housing, dining, recreational and safety programs.
- Organize agendas for Biological Station VIPS visits, including state and University leadership and researchers and lecturers.
- Lead facilitating community involvement/participation in community activities and be part of the leadership team that builds a vision for what this looks like year-round.
Administrative Operations (10%)
- Oversee procedures and compliance for facilities financial operations, including expense reporting and administration for facilities team.
- Coordinate the team to create and maintain policy and procedures manuals.
- Assist Facilities Manager with project specifications and scope and bidding processes.
Plant & Research Facilities Operations Leadership (30%)
- Lead strategic and sustainability plans for research facilities.
- Provide vision and leadership on what facilities we should grow, what facilities we should invest in maintaining, and what facilities we should sunset.
- Facilitate collaboration and help provide leadership for the Facilities Manager and Resident Biologist around management of,
- 20-acre Pellston campus residential, classroom, and research facilities operations and capital improvements.
- Science infrastructure: monitor, maintain and promote use of research facilities such as stream lab, underground soil lab, flux towers, greenhouse, chem lab, etc., and communicate our resources to the UMBS community.
- Serve as UMBS Safety Coordinator and manage and activate campus-wide safety protocols and policies in consultation with UM college and university teams as well as regional municipalities and state agencies.
- Develop and communicate field safety protocols for the campus community. Work to support a culture of safety in all aspects of field station operations.
- Ensure lab and facility safety, including coordinating with LSA EHS and the University of Michigan Department of Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (OSEH) to ensure general lab and field safety compliance.
- Serve as the UMBS Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO); chemical storage oversight and inventory; develop and communicate chemical handling policies; developing, implementing, and documenting station-wide safety policies, procedures, and training programs, ensuring buy-in from all UMBS users.
- Work to support a culture of safety in all aspects of field station operations.
Property Management (10%)
- Ensure access and safety for all students, faculty, staff and public.
- Assist and advise Director and Associate Director on the stewardship of UMBS-managed lands in Cheboygan, Emmet, Chippewa Counties for purposes of research, education, and preservation of natural communities.
- Manage UMBS volunteer stewards program in property maintenance and research.
Supervision and leadership (10%)
- Lead Facilities and Dining Hall teams.
- Serve as functional supervisor for Facilities Manager and Dining Hall Manager.
- Foster community and collaborative work structures year-round at the Pelston campus.
Outreach (10%)
- Participate in development opportunities in northern Michigan and interact with local communities and adjacent landowners to develop relationships and resolve conflicts.
- Facilitate opportunities for dialogue between scientific and local communities.
- Help us foster an open campus where the community is aware of our activities and feels welcomed to participate in our programming.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant scientific discipline or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5 or more years of experience supervising a full-time team of employees
- 5 or more years of leadership experience in an academic, research, or field station setting
- Demonstrated experience in setting and implementing strategic organizational plans
- Safety planning and protocol implementation experience in laboratory facilities, field research, and residential environments, including direct work with institutional Environmental and Health Safety (EHS) and Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (OSEH) offices
- Proven experience in project management, including budget development and management, bidding processes, and oversight of complex operations
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's degree in a scientific discipline or related field
- 10 or more years of operational management experience at a research field station
- Demonstrated success with proposal writing and securing grant awards to support operations or research initiatives
- Community outreach experience, with evidence of building relationships with local organizations, stakeholders, and/or the public
