Assist the surgical team in the performance of operating procedures and to select instruments and supplies for surgical procedures.

General supervision is received from Nurse Manager or other designated official.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist the surgical team during operating procedures by passing instruments, sponges and sutures to surgeons and surgical assistants.
  • Select and layout instruments for operating procedures.
  • Prepare sterile supplies for operating procedures.
  • Prepare surgical trays for operating procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation of patients for surgery.
  • Move patients after completion of surgery for transfer to Recovery area.
  • Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of an accredited or military Surgical Technologist program.

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires moderate standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients. 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Some experience as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Certification from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

Work Schedule

This is a full-time (40 hr/wk) Day/Night rotator position.

This position requires a fully onsite presence.  

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
