Job Summary

Join the School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) as our Web Developer and help shape engaging, secure, and high-performing digital experiences for a vibrant and diverse academic community. In this dynamic role, you'll provide direct support for faculty, research, and administrative websites, ensuring their stability and security, while also managing the main institutional SEAS website. You will apply best practices in web administration, including development, operations, security hardening, compliance and performance optimization.

You will report directly to the SEAS Director of Information Technology Services.

This position can be filled at the intermediate or senior level depending on experience.

What You'll Do

Web Development & Administration

  • Lead migration of faculty and School sites from AFS to Pantheon. Ensure smooth transition and maintain data integrity.
  • Proactively maintain and enhance WordPress and Drupal Multisite environments, supporting both individual and institutional websites to ensure seamless performance, scalability, and accessibility for all users.
  • Utilize your expertise in web programming (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, PHP) to design and develop custom themes and plugins, resolve advanced technical challenges, and deliver innovative feature improvements and API integrations that enhance user experience for all stakeholders.
  • Serve as point of contact for troubleshooting and technical support for faculty and staff web needs.

Security & Compliance

  • Oversee security and accessibility for all SEAS web properties, including the School's main site and faculty/research group sites.
  • Proactively manage hosting, conduct vulnerability assessments, and enforce university branding and WCAG standards (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).
  • Implement timely CMS and extension updates to mitigate security risks.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of technical setups, standard operating procedures, and security protocols.

Technical Consulting 

  • Provide direct guidance to faculty and researchers on SEO, digital accessibility, handling sensitive data, and customizing their web presence.
  • Collaborate with communications and IT teams to ensure School website content and tools remain up-to-date and effective.
  • Facilitate training sessions to empower users and promote best practices.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related STEM field, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.  
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience in web administration, development, and/or engineering, particularly for public-facing platforms.
  • Solid understanding of web security practices.
  • Proficiency with Drupal and WordPress, including multisite management.
  • Proficient in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (with experience in frameworks like React, Vue, or Angular), PHP or Python, and relational databases.  
  • Demonstrated commitment to web accessibility, implementing and auditing WCAG 2.1 AA standards. Familiarity with SEO principles, performance tuning, and accessibility best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully collaborating with diverse teams or populations, employing a positive and engaging approach.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and maintaining productivity and timeliness.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships through clear communication and empathy.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
     

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

The mode of work for this position is Mobile/Remote or Hybrid. Occasional meetings at the Ann Arbor office may be required for this role.
 

Additional Information

  • Salary and classification level will be determined based on experience.
  • Candidates must be located within a reasonable commuting distance to the University of Michigan Ann Arbor campus.
