Responsibilities*
Duties:
The Clinical Nursing Director (CND) will plan and manage the clinical and administrative operations of the intra-hospital transport team. SWAT comprises RNs, paramedics, and administrative staff, providing transport of moderate and high-risk patients to temporary procedural areas throughout the medical complex, including University Hospital, University Hospital South, Children's and Women's Hospital (C&W), The Rogel Cancer Center, Cardiovascular Center, Taubman Center, and the Pavilion. SWAT also provides moderate sedation to patients in procedure areas and at the bedside, for both adult and pediatric patients. The paramedic team also responds to medical events involving outpatients, visitors, family, and staff throughout the above buildings, the attached parking structures, and the courtyard. The CND assures implementation of patient care and quality assurance standards; plans, organizes, and evaluates clinical practice and educational activities. The CND works closely with the MPLAN Medical Director to create and support an environment that delivers cutting-edge, innovative care to an ever-growing number of intra-hospital patients.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement unit goals and objectives, which include the establishment of standards of practice in patient care consistent with national professional and regulatory guidelines.
- Integrate unit goals and objectives with Nursing Service goals and objectives. Advise and assist with establishing priorities and developing institutional programs.
- Work closely with medical staff and other disciplines for the successful implementation of patient, unit, and institutional objectives. Assist in the resolution of interdisciplinary operating problems.
- Supervise operations of the unit. Establish minimum/maximum staffing patterns to ensure quality patient care. Initiate and implement a staffing schedule that meets the needs of patient volume and acuity.
- Identify and recommend specific staffing needs and position qualifications consistent with the respective unit objectives and patient case mix.
- Interview and select qualified personnel.
- Evaluate the performance of nursing staff responsible for the patient care unit. Guide nursing and paramedic staff to enable achievement of unit and institutional objectives, particularly as related to high-quality patient care.
- Interpret and implement University and hospital personnel policies and programs, and ensure their uniform and correct application.
- Project and monitor personnel budget for patient care unit. Provide information regarding budget variances to the ACNO.
- Collaborate and coordinate with other disciplines to plan, evaluate, and implement the commodity budget for the patient care unit.
- Initiate and implement in-service guidelines for unit-level orientation and staff development. Encourage and provide opportunities for continuing education of the nursing staff.
- Initiate, plan, analyze, and participate in Nursing staff development programs and workshops.
- Ensures ongoing competency assessment occurs; provides educational experience for nursing and paramedic staff, as required to maintain clinical standards.
Reporting Relationship: The Clinical Nursing Director reports to the Emergency, Psychiatry, and Surgical Services Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO).

Required Qualifications*
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Master's degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered).
- If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required.
- Two (2) years recent leadership experience, to include demonstrated leadership, management, communication, counseling, problem solving, decision making, conflict resolution and group process skills
- Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence
- Nursing leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Desired Qualifications*
- Two (2) years of recent supervisory experience in critical care transport
- Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience with demonstration of progressive clinical competence in critical care or emergency medicine
- Interest-based problem solving and negotiations
- Familiarity with the continuous quality improvement process is desirable
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including personnel management, and the ability to perform as a role model for nursing staff
- Experience with the change management process is desirable
- Expertise in Transport/Critical Care Nursing Initiatives
- Experience as a critical care transport nurse
- Emergency Medical Technician licensure (EMT or above) and/or experience practicing as a paramedic in the pre-hospital or hospital environment.
- Experience with dispatching transport teams or coordinating multiple teams to provide care across a community or hospital.
Work Schedule
Hours: 40 hours/week
Shift: Requires flexibility to unit needs
