Job Summary

BMC2 is a collaborative consortium dedicated to improving the quality of care and outcomes in patients who undergo cardiovascular procedures across the State of Michigan. BMC2 is developing a new heart failure registry, which will take a population health-based approach to measuring outcomes and improving quality of care for patients with heart failure. The new registry will bring together diverse stakeholders including patients, specialists, primary care physicians, and pharmacists. Support for BMC2 is provided by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network as part of the BCBSM Value Partnerships Program. 

We seek a Data Architect Lead (Data Scientist) to drive the design and optimization of our registrys data infrastructure, analytics, and reporting capabilities. This is a unique opportunity to blend data science, architecture, and biomedical expertise in a collaborative and mission-driven environment.

Under limited direction, the Data Scientist will design and construct relational databases for data warehousing of the new BMC2 Heart Failure Registry. This role will develop data modeling and is responsible for data acquisition; access analysis and design; and archive, recovery, and load strategy design. Working with the BMC2 senior programming team, the Data Scientist will be responsible for designing and deploying a new model for data flow and ensuring its alignment with overarching quality goals.

Responsibilities*

  • Designs and leads development of the data model and infrastructure, with a focus on scalable, secure, and interoperable solutions.
  • Designs advanced workflows for extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL) clinical data utilizing FHIR protocols?to capture core clinical variables across heterogeneous EHR systems.
  • Ensures seamless integration of new data sources with existing warehouse structures and optimizes data pipelines for high performance and functionality.
  • Establishes rigorous processes for data acquisition, validation, integration, and storage from multiple sites, ensuring data harmonization across varied clinical systems.
  • Applies sophisticated machine learning and predictive analytics methods to generate actionable insights and support population health management. 
  • Plan, conduct and supervise assignments involving multiple or one project. 
  • Review progress and evaluate results. Schedule and supervise project work. Evaluate progress and results and recommend changes in procedures as needed.
  • Exercise authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. 

Required Qualifications*

  • Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or related field or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5-8 experience in managing data from complex, relational databases, preferably within the healthcare environment.
  • Proven expertise in extracting, transforming, and harmonizing EHR data using APIs specifically utilizing FHIR standards and other healthcare interoperability protocols.
  • Significant familiarity with healthcare data standards (HL7, FHIR, ICD/LOINC codes, REDCap, Epic/Clarity preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HIPAA, security, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with Git-based version control workflows.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based server environments.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize work effectively, and make sound technical decisions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills that bridge various stakeholders to establish trusting relationships.
  • Balance long-term architectural thinking with practical, delivery-focused execution.
  • Demonstrated growth mindset to actively seek opportunities to learn, adapt, and apply new skills and knowledge to enhance team and personal performance.

Background Screening
