Responsibilities*

Laboratory Support 60%:

  • Provides technical support and directs undergraduate and graduate students on designing, fabricating, and testing their experiments.
  • Manages the daily operation of all departmental wind tunnels, coordinates, and provides diverse support to all outside vendors using the wind tunnel facilities.
  • Maintains the student group work area, including assisting with technical aspects of designing, building, and testing prototype experiments and test rigs.
  • Trains all users of the student machine shop in safety specified by Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) and maintains all machines and tools in the shop.
  • Builds displays, scientific apparatus, and models using materials other than metal.
  • Assists the Aerospace Engineering Technician Team with jobs requiring multiple personnel.
  • Mentors, advises, and works with students in the development, manufacturing, and assembly of mechanical components.
  • Develop standard operating procedures for departmental equipment.
  • Train and supervise operators in operation of large equipment.

Infrastructure Maintenance and Improvements 30%:

  • Maintain, repair, and operate large equipment such as vacuum pumps, air compressors, and mechanical systems across all Aerospace Engineering facilities, including off-campus sites.

Safety Compliance and Security 10%: 

  • Trains all users of the student machine shop in safety specified by the department and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS).
  • Emergency Response team member trained in CPR, First aid and AED

Required Qualifications*

  • Two years of experience in a technical vocation.
  • Ability to effectively use and operate various tools and equipment, and a high skill level with basic hand tools.
  • Ability to effectively move equipment and materials weighing at least 50 pounds.
  • Ability to travel throughout various areas of building(s) with or without stairs/elevators.
  • Ability to work and interact in a professional and effective manner with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Strong knowledge of safety, compliance, and hazardous materials protocols.
  • Competency with using a personal computer, email, and software (e.g. gmail, Microsoft products).
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and coordinate efforts across multiple stakeholders.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, facilities management, or related field.
  • 4+ experience in a technical vocation.
  • Experience supporting research operations in laboratory environments preferably within academia.
  • Operated wind tunnels.
  • Experience welding and instrument making.
  • Experience with 3D printing.

Additional Information

  • Routinely moves audio/visual equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across campus for various classroom and event needs.

  • Occasionally ascends/descends ladders to service lights.

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position during the entire shift.

  • Constantly position self to install computer equipment, including under desks.

  • Requires the ability to travel to various locations to conduct work and deliver materials.

  • This position requires inspection of sites to detect safety concerns.
