Job Summary
The Cognitive Health Services Research (COG-HSR) program in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of General Medicine, seeks a full-time Research Senior Supervisor to provide leadership for a nationally recognized, interdisciplinary medical research program focused on brain health, chronic disease, and aging.
COG-HSR conducts innovative health services and clinical research in brain health (stroke, dementia, vascular cognitive impairment), chronic disease, and aging, informs healthcare policy, and improves care and quality of life for individuals and their families. The program is also committed to training the next generation of outcomes researchers through mentorship of junior faculty and trainees.
The Research Senior Supervisor serves as a senior leader in the program, partnering closely with program leadership and staff to advance the program?s scientific mission, strategic priorities, and long-term sustainability. This role manages the program?s research portfolio, staff, and infrastructure and supports the growth of collaborative, multidisciplinary research initiatives that align with COG-HSR?s mission and goals.

Responsibilities*
Research Project and Portfolio Management:
Lead and manage all projects and new grant submissions within the COG-HSR portfolio from start to finish, driving operational execution for high-quality research.
Strategic Leadership: Develop study strategy, manage complex processes, and provide leadership for the entire project lifecycle from idea to proposal to close-out.
Team & Stakeholder Management: Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams (scientists, project managers, statisticians, vendors), manage external partnerships (labs, studies, community organizations), and serve as the main point of contact for sponsors. Partner as needed with community and internal stakeholders to facilitate community engagement plans.
Operational Oversight: Oversee daily activities, ensure compliance with research and IRB protocols, SOPs, and regulations, and track progress against plans.
Budget & Timeline Management: Create budgets in partnership with PIs and award specialists, manage costs, forecast resources, and ensure projects stay within budget and timelines.
Risk Management: Identify potential risks, develop mitigation strategies, and resolve issues to keep projects and grant applications on track.
Quality & Compliance: Ensure adherence to data integrity, NIH standards, IRB protocols, internal SOPs, and regulatory requirements to safeguard research integrity. Lead and manage IRB protocols, data use agreements, and data contracts (e.g., Medicare claims, Health and Retirement Study, National Dementia Workforce Study). Prepare and submit progress reports.
Reporting: Create detailed reports on project status, finances, performance, and data collection for senior management. Prepare and submit progress reports to sponsors and studies.
Science: Manage all scientific activities and drive the research in collaboration with principal investigators (i.e., study design, aims development, and evaluation plans).
Dissemination: Manage dissemination activities, including newsletters, manuscripts, conference abstracts, posters, oral presentations, and symposium organization.
Staff Supervision, Communication, and Coordination:
Manage program-wide staffing and resource allocation across multiple concurrent projects.
Hire, train, supervise, and mentor research staff. Oversee day-to-day work across the program staff, including task assignment, coordination, and quality oversight.
Align staff annual goals with U-M?s SMART framework; monitor progress and suggest professional development opportunities and resources for program staff.
Lead performance evaluations and monthly/quarterly one-on-one meetings with program staff (project managers and analysts).
Work with division administration to procure and manage software, equipment, and other program resources.
Facilitate and model clear, consistent communication within a large, interdisciplinary, and cross-institutional research program.
Oversee program communication and coordinate all program, team, staff, co-investigator, and other meetings, seminars, and symposia.
Build and maintain productive professional relationships with internal and external collaborators.
Strategic Planning and Funding Development:
Identify opportunities for shared infrastructure, analytic and administrative implementation strategies, and future collaborations across the program.
Forecast program funding trajectories and partner with faculty program leadership to define and advance the program?s long-term research vision.
Identify and evaluate extramural and intramural funding opportunities (at NIH and from private organizations) to sustain the program over time.
Collaborate with faculty investigators on the development, writing, and submission of competitive research proposals.
Required Qualifications*
Master's degree in Public Health (MPH), MS, or a related field (e.g., Social Sciences, Biostatistics, Health Administration, Health Services Research) and a minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in research program or grant management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Extensive experience managing complex research portfolios, including federally and non-federally funded projects, with responsibility for budgets, timelines, reporting, and compliance.
Proven ability to manage research staff and collaborate with HR on hiring, training, performance management, and mentoring within academic research settings.
Skilled in developing program strategies to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
Experienced in grant development and submission, leading administrative components, and contributing to scientific content.
Demonstrated leadership of cross-functional teams (scientists, project managers, statisticians, vendors), and ability to foster collaboration among internal and external partners (labs, studies, sites, community organizations) and effectively resolve conflicts.
Proficient in completing research projects and overseeing daily project activities, including protocol development, regulatory submissions, data collection, site management, and vendor oversight.
Strong ability to synthesize, write, and communicate scientific concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Excellent organizational and project management skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize competing demands, and consistently meet deadlines.
Demonstrated capability to work independently with minimal supervision and to collaborate effectively with principal investigators, co-investigators, analysts, research staff, and external partners.
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with a professional and collaborative approach to problem-solving.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and quick to learn team-specific software (e.g., REDCap, Asana) and institution-specific research and financial systems.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build productive relationships across interdisciplinary and cross-institutional teams.
Desired Qualifications*
- Doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH) in a relevant field.
- Direct experience managing NIH or other federal grants successfully, including progress reporting and sponsor communications.
- Competent in use of large administrative, cohort, or survey datasets (e.g., Medicare claims, Health and Retirement Study, National Dementia Workforce) including data use agreements and IRB processes.
- Demonstrated experience contributing to peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or other scholarly dissemination activities.
- Proven ability to lead cross-institutional or community-engaged research partnerships.
- Familiarity with academic medical center or university research environments, including pre- and post-award processes.
- Proficient in with research management platforms (e.g., REDCap, Asana, Notion), data use agreements, IRB processes, and regulatory compliance.
- Training and experience in research, compliance, human subjects protections, or regulatory oversight.
