Job Summary
This part-time Clinical Exercise Physiologist position is part of the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Michigan Congenital Heart Center (CHC). Your primary focus will be to plan and implement fitness programs and services for patients and community; to conduct non-invasive diagnostic tests; and to prescribe exercise programs for patients at the Medical Center.
You will collaborate in a multidisciplinary team setting with physicians, nurses, dieticians, and other healthcare professionals to assess patients' needs and monitor their progress, ensuring optimal care coordination. This role requires strong clinical expertise, interpersonal communication, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment.
Responsibilities*
Essential:
- Develop and conduct the fitness testing services available, including EKG treadmill tests, oxygen uptakes, body composition analysis, and muscle strength, flexibility and endurance assessments.
- Prepare patients and perform resting EKGs, holter monitors, and other cardiovascular diagnostic and monitoring procedures.
- Prescribe specific programs of exercise to patients and counsel them on how to achieve their fitness goals.
- Assist in the development and implementation of special exercise programs for individuals with health problems. Responsible for evaluating the programs' physiological safety and effectiveness and for teaching classes (e.g. cardiac rehab, arthritis exercise, etc.).
- Assist in the organization and implementation of wellness screenings offered to area businesses and organizations.
- Serve as a consultant and speaker on the importance of and effects of exercise and other health promotion topics.
- Assist in the establishment of data collection and evaluation procedures for fitness-related programs.
- Contribute to the advancement and promotion of services through participation in professional associations, writing articles for publications and representing the Medical Center in community activities.
- Monitor patients' vital signs and be prepared to perform CPR or other necessary emergency first aid procedures, while seeking appropriate medical assistance.
- May supervise work of other physiologists, including hiring, evaluating performance and discipline.
- May train staff and students in new or revised work methods and procedures.
- Process patient care orders using the electronic ordering system may be required in certain areas.
- May prepare routine and special reports and sections of annual budget.
- May assist in the establishment of unit rules and regulations.

Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's in exercise physiology, exercise science or a related field
- At least one year of pediatric experience.
- Certification by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Exercise Physiologist or Clinical Exercise Physiologist within one year of date of hire.
- Certification in BCLS/ACLS obtained within one year of date of hire.
- Experience in clinical testing, exercise prescription and evaluation.

Desired Qualifications*
- Master's degree in exercise physiology, exercise science or a related field.
- Six months Cardiology experience.
- One-year experience in both stress testing and cardiac rehabilitation.
- Clinical Internship in Phase II and Phase III Rehabilitation and Clinical Exercise Testing.
- Health education and wellness program experience.
Work Schedule
The position is part-time. Schedule is 20 hours per week. Specific days of week/hours to be decided upon hire with supervisor and exercise lab leadership.
Additional Information
Supervision Received:
- General supervision is received from a physician or other designated official.
Supervision Exercised:
- Functional and administrative supervision may be exercised over other exercise physiologists, temporary and new staff.
Physical Requirements:
- This position requires extensive standing/walking, as well as lifting, positioning, pushing, and/or transferring of patients.
Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
