Job Summary

Gifts of Art at Michigan Medicine is seeking a half time (20 hrs/wk) Music (Arts) Practitioner to join our dynamic arts in healthcare team.  Basic duties include playing appropriate live acoustic music at the bedside of patients, working with clinical staff to identify those patients who would benefit from a music visit.  The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of appropriate music for specific patient needs, and be familiar with issues of clinical deportment, palliative care, patient monitoring equipment, as well as medical, psychosocial, cultural, and ethical issues related to patient care in hospitals. The candidate also works on occasion to bring music to clinical staff areas and assists with other duties as assigned in support of a comprehensive arts in healthcare program. 

 We are seeking a highly skilled musician on an acoustic instrument or keyboard. A broad repertoire is desired. The successful candidate must be able to use their talents in service of others and be able to perform a wide variety of appropriate musical styles.

Gifts of Art is one of the oldest and most comprehensive arts in healthcare programs in the country.  A recognized pioneer in the field, we bring the world of the arts to Michigan Medicine patients, visitors and staff with the intention of transforming the healthcare experience, supporting the healing process and enhancing the health and wellbeing of all we serve.  For over twenty-five years, the Bedside Music program has been offering live music at the bedside of patients to bring comfort, help reduce stress, manage pain, and lift the spirit.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Playing appropriate live music at the bedside of patients
  • Working with clinical staff to identify patients who would benefit from a music visit.
  • Documenting, tracking and keeping records on music visits.
  • Playing music on clinical units for the comfort and stress relief of staff and visitors.
  • Attending staff and other departmental meetings and events as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned in support of a comprehensive arts in healthcare program.

Required Qualifications*

WHAT IS REQUIRED

  • Certification from one of the programs accredited by the National Standards Board for Therapeutic Musicians, a Music Therapy Degree, or comparable combination of skill, training and experience.  
  • Minimum one year working bedside as a music practitioner, therapeutic musician, music therapist or equivalent in a healthcare facility, or comparable experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate music for specific patient needs
  • Knowledge of issues of clinical deportment, palliative care, patient monitoring equipment
  • Knowledge of the medical, psychosocial, cultural and ethical issues related to patient care in hospitals
  • Demonstrated musical proficiency on an acoustic instrument or keyboard
  • Excellent communication skills, including computer skills. 

  • Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three audio or video files that demonstrate musical proficiency on the primary instrument and diversity of repertoire.

Desired Qualifications*

Minimum 2 years working bedside as a music practitioner, therapeutic musician or music therapist in a hospital setting.  Ability to accompany oneself as a skilled vocalist.  Demonstrated range and diversity of musical styles.  Continuing education in the fields of arts in health, therapeutic music or music therapy.

Work Locations

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP), which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.
