Job Summary

To assist with research activities within the Support, Health, and Resilient Engagement in Daily Life (SHARED) Experiences Lab directed by Dr. Courtney Polenick in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan. Key projects funded by the National Institute on Aging focus on family caregivers and older adults living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The overall goal of this research program is to identify potentially modifiable daily experiences (e.g., daily stress and sleep patterns) within care dyads (i.e., family caregivers and the people they support) that influence health and well-being over time.

Position Specific Responsibilities will Include: 

With guidance from faculty and research personnel, the Clinical Research Technician will work under the direction of the Clinical Research Coordinator to assist with multiple organizational and administrative details of assigned projects, including but not limited to the recruitment, screening, and scheduling of study participants. The Clinical Research Technician will serve as the lead interviewer for the research team, which will involve conducting telephone interviews and assisting in the training of research assistants. The Clinical Research Technician will also assume primary responsibility for offloading of data from study devices (e.g., actigraphy monitors to measure physical activity and sleep). 

The Clinical Research Technician will develop, program, and test surveys; conduct telephone or video calls to review study procedures with study participants; track data completion and follow up with participants as needed; complete participant check-in calls; assist in the preparation of IRB applications, progress reports, and other summary materials; and perform literature searches.

Additional responsibilities include: 

  • Assisting with translating recruitment materials from English to Spanish and communicating with Spanish-speaking participants. 
  • Supporting coordination and administration of protocol visits under the guidance of the Clinical Research Coordinator.
  • Assisting with study lived experience panel meetings and related communication, ordering materials, tracking research related supplies, detailed record-keeping, filing, preparing study mailings and newsletters, the sending and receiving of study equipment, study participant payments, assisting with the supervision and training of student research assistants, and other duties as assigned. 
  • The Clinical Research Technician will assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, conference presentations, and grant proposals. 
  • There will be opportunities to lead and/or collaborate on papers, posters, and presentations for scientific meetings. 
  • The Clinical Research Technician will work independently and collaboratively with other team members to fulfill the goals of the projects.

Required Qualifications*

  • Associate degree or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is necessary. 
  • Minimum 1 year of directly related experience in clinical research and clinical trials is necessary. (Please review SoCRA's Definition of a Clinical Research Professional For qualifying experience prior to applying.) 

or 

  • An advanced degree in a health-related areas such as: Health Sciences; Behavioral Sciences; Public Health, Health Care Administration, Clinical Research Administration, Social Work, Psychology, Epidemiology, Foreign MD 

or

  • Minimum 3 years of human subject experience (clinical, lab or health regulations) such as related patience care, related community health and wellness, related clinical information, and research.

The successful candidate is also required to: 

  • Have fluency in speaking, reading, and writing both English and Spanish. 
  • Hold strong organizational skills with a keen attention to detail, outstanding interpersonal skills, the ability to maintain positive relationships with various stakeholders. 
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 
  • Have excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and the willingness to develop additional skills related to web delivery tools, digital media platforms, survey administration tools (e.g., REDCap, Twilio, Qualtrics), and statistical software platforms (e.g., SPSS), and the collection and analysis of actigraphy data. 
  • Travel, as needed, within the state of Michigan and have reliable transportation. 
  • Work flexible shifts and adapt to changing work schedules as needed (including some evenings and weekends). 

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Academic knowledge of a health science discipline, such as public health, psychology, social work, or related behavioral sciences is highly desired.
  • Previous clinical or research experience, particularly with adult and/or geriatric populations and minoritized populations, is highly desired but not required.

Modes of Work

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.

Work Schedule

This position has the capability to work a hybrid schedule. This is a full-time position; 40 hours/week Monday through Friday, core hours are 9 AM to 5 PM but could potentially change based on operational needs and required meetings.

Work Locations

This position is located at one of our Michigan Medicine Campus locations in Ann Arbor, MI. 

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
