Responsibilities*
During internship:
All duties and responsibilities within the scope of practice as a Registered Nurse (RN), performed under the direct supervision of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) until certification and credentialing are successfully completed. Work collaboratively in a team environment. Collaborate with CRNA to prepare preoperative assessments including health histories and physical examinations. Develop the Anesthesia Care Plan with the CRNA and Anesthesiologist. Contribute to appropriate perioperative anesthesia care. Contribute to and monitor appropriate patient records including quality assurance documentation. Contribute to postoperative evaluations in accordance with department policies. Participate in ongoing projects. Support perioperative providers as appropriate. Other duties or projects as assigned. Function in accordance with all institutional policies and guidelines. This position involved radiation exposure and the requirement to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Must be able to fulfill required weekday, weekend, and holiday obligations. Must be self-directed, reliable, demonstrate initiative and motivation to work independently, and exhibit excellent communication and problem solving skills.
Once credentialing and privileging have been achieved:
Provide anesthesia and anesthesia related care to facilitate diagnostic, therapeutic and/or surgical procedures to all patients regardless of age under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist, working collaboratively in a team environment . Prepare preoperative assessments including health histories and physical examinations. Develop the Anesthesia Care Plan with the anesthesiologist. Initiate and maintain appropriate perioperative anesthesia care. Maintain appropriate patient records including quality assurance documentation. Complete postoperative evaluations in accordance with department policies. Participate in ongoing projects. Support perioperative providers. Other duties or projects as assigned. Function in accordance with all institutional policies and guidelines. Maintain licensure, certification, credentialing, and current BLS and ACLS or PALS status at all times. This position requires radiation exposure and the requirement to wear the appropriate (PPE) personal protective equipment. Must be able to fulfill required weekend obligations. Must be self-directed, reliable, demonstrate initiative and motivation to work independently, and demonstrate excellent communication and problem solving skills.
Required Qualifications*
Required Qualifications for Intern Position*
Current and accurate resume and application must be completed.
Expected graduation from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, with a Master?s degree, within six months of interview.
Two years FTE of pediatric ICU nursing experience.
Current ACLS or PALS certification.
Required Qualifications to Progress to Graduate CRNA Position*
The expectation is that this intern position transitions into a CRNA position at CW. In order to transition to a CRNA, the following criteria must be met:
Successful completion of the National Certification Exam (NCE) within 45 days of graduating from an accredited CRNA program
Failure to pass the NCE exam within 45 days of graduation will result in termination of the intern position. The candidate is eligible to apply for other positions for which they are qualified.
Michigan Nurse Anesthetist Specialty certification documentation initiated and provided as soon as possible following successful completion of the NCE.
Successful completion of credentialing and privileging at Michigan Medicine.
Satisfactory performance in the intern role.
RN Intern title will be changed to graduate CRNA and pay adjusted based on collective bargaining agreement (CBA) following confirmation of meeting all criteria above.
Once the Intern transitions to graduate CRNA, they will begin a six month probationary period. Upon completion of probation the seniority accrued will begin with the original date of hire as an Intern. Internal hires are exempt from the six month probationary period.
An intern can only remain in this position for up to six months. Failure to secure other Michigan Medicine employment after six months in the position will result in termination of employment.

Desired Qualifications*
Five years FTE of pediatric ICU nursing experience.
Completion of pediatric nurse anesthesia fellowship.
Expected graduation from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, with a Doctoral degree, within the next six months of interview.

Required qualifications for intern position must be met by the candidate to be fully considered and interviewed for the position. Progression to the graduate CRNA position is contingent upon satisfaction of all required qualifications.

Modes of Work
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
Work Schedule
Hours: 40 hours per week
Shift: Day/Evening/Night rotation; variable shift start times and shift length. Flexibility with schedule is required.
Union Affiliation
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
Background Screening
